This guide is beautifully illustrated with clear drawings and distribution maps. It is portable, robustly bound and is well printed. I wanted a pocket guide to the birds of Margarita Island which is just off the Venezuelan coast but not an official West Indian Island. The Steven Hilty book "Birds of Venezuela" is exhaustive but too heavy, so I annotated the Helm guide to the West Indies. This proved a successful compromise.
I hope one day to visit the West Indies proper and will take my copy of this West Indies guide with me. I will not take the Macmillan "Birds of the Eastern Caribbean" as the photos are nowhere near as good as the illustrations in this Helm guide.

As a Tour Manager for a company catering for the over fifties I usually buy the relevant "bird book" along with the guide books for the contries I visit.I have always found the Helm Field Guides excellent. Their illustrations are superb and they are very easy to use.I now have quite a collection and I must say, armed with a pair of bins and a Helm Field Guide, they add another dimension to my travels and have given many of my customers a great deal of pleasure.

Certainly a good field guide to carry around in Barbados with the familiar Helm quality. The edition rated was dated 2003 (reprinted 2011) and there have been some taxonomic and status and range changes over this time, perhaps enough to warrant a new edition, but in the meanwhile the current edition remains a worthwhile field guide.

The book is excellent. However it is impossible to view detail of the plates of the "kindle" version on either the fire HDX or the kindle app on a nexus7. Fortunately they are okay on an iPad.

Did the job perfectly well for our recent holiday trip. Even a non ornithologist and casual viewer of bird life such as myself was able to identify numerous species of birds thanks to many fine illustrations alongside brief concise descriptions.

We bought this for a trip to Tobago, having also bought the birds of Trinidad and Tobago guide. Although covering the whole of the West Indies, it does contain details of all the (normally resident) birds you are likely to see on any of the islands. Very clear illustrations and descriptions.

Part of a series of well illustrated and comprehensive guides. This one is well up to the standard of the series. There are no better guides.Field Guide to the Birds of the West Indies (Helm Field Guides)

This was recommended by many as the best book available. It was comprehensive and we did manage to identify some birds from it but also needed to use internet to confirm identification. Therefore a useful tool but not perfect. Glad we had taken the book as never saw any bird identification books for sale when we were away.
