Review

'For visiting birders, I would unhesitatingly recommend this book as a must - there is no other guide like it.' -- Scottish Bird News (June 2007)

'This excellent guide is the first to deal exclusively with the birds of this spectacular region... This has to be the field guide of choice for anyone visiting the islands.' -- Birdtours.co.uk (29th August 2006)

'Tony Clarke's superb new book covers all the species recorded on the islands to date... supported beautifully by Chris Orgill and Tony Disley's illustrations. This is an absolute must-have for the birdwatcher planning a trip to any of the Atlantic Islands.' -- The Visitor (13th September 2006)

'Tony Clarke's energy, enthusiam and awareness shine through time
and time again - it's a splendid achievement. I like his whole approach...
not only has he filled an important gap in birding coverage, he has done so
in a way that, if slightly quirky, works very well.' -- Birds Illustrated, Spring 2007

'Tony Clarke's guide is more up-to-date, and more pragmatic in its
approach, than any other work covering the Atlantic Islands, and should be
required reading for every resident or visiting birder.' -- Birdwatch, August 2006

This book is just THE book upon birding for the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores and Tony Clarke is one of the leading lights in the world upon its subject matter. The book is clear, well illustrated and informative but, it has to be said, much of the content could be found in any book upon European Birds. The result is that this is a mighty tome covering every conceivable bird in the region and most of them fall into the accidental or rarity class. Personally, I would have preferred a smaller offering describing birds specific to the area with more room dedicated to site description. I'm just not sure that a book of this size (and weight) is justified for the area in question. These comments should not in any way discourage readers who want a "gold standard" reference book.

The Guide covers a range of islands, which have considerable differences in the bird life present. Hence only part of the species described are relevant to a particular island. However it is still probably the best guide available.

An excellent reference. It is nice to come across a book that is as dedicated as this and is well worth the money.

This is an excellent book which i bought to take on a trip to the islands of Cape Verde. I found the book very helpful in detailing what i could expect to see on islands as a whole and on each of the individual islands. I found the information provided to be accurate and informative and highly recommend it to other birders.

If, like me, you are holidaying in the Canaries or any of the other Atlantic islands and have a passion for birds this is a must have guide.

Great images and detailed descriptions I found it invaluable.

There are other books which will give you some of the birds you are likely to see but this guide seems to be the most comprehensive guide at a practical size for the holiday maker or serious birder alike.

I'm not sure who the target audience was for this book but I suspect that visiting birders who have a good knowledge of European birds may be disappointed. The same limited space is offered to the illustrations of the endemic birds as to all the vagrants from the US, Africa and Europe. The illustrations of the endemics are small and do not include all races and juveniles for several species. The species accounts in the text are more detailed but overall I think this was an opportunity missed.

I took the Collins guide and left this at home as I preferred the illustrations.

The book was useful and the drawings are accurate, the text is also very informative. However, the book is heavy and there are no distribution maps. On the opposite page from the plates there is a key and little additional information, and it is necessary to then go to another page to look at the text. As there are no distribution maps it is not immediately apparent if a particular species occurs on any particular island or indeed group of islands. The book was useful but could be better by the addition of maps.
