Product Description

Product Description

JP, Chrissie & The Fairground Boys is a project involving the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde--one of the biggest female rock icons of the last 30 years--and JP Jones,a 31-year-old musician from Porthcawl, a holiday resort in Wales. Jones and Chrissie met each other in November 2008 in London while he was working on his solo career after his band Grace split and this album bears the fruits of their labour. The Fairground Boys are Patrick Murdoch on guitar, Sam Swallow on piano and keyboards, Vezio Bacci on bass and Geoff Holroyde on drums.

BBC Review

Chrissie Hynde has been candid in her lyrics before, as the Pretenders oeuvre testifies. Yet this – just when an artist of her years and achievements is supposed to slump into cosy, risk-free predictability – is extraordinary. Fidelity! – a collaboration with 31-year-old Welsh singer JP Jones and friends – is an autobiographical love story of uncommon self-exposure. Their songs are very nearly as good as the tale behind them.

Hynde and (former Grace vocalist) Jones met (both "hammered") at a party in 2008. They kept in touch while Hynde toured the States. Upon her return she whisked him off to a swanky hotel in Havana. There they worked out the dynamics of their relationship. In love, they knew their passion was doomed by a 30-year age gap. So they decided, says Hynde, to "put all our irrational emotions of disappointment into a tale of woe, heartbreak and ultimately, redemption". She’s not kidding. The songs cover every angle of the thwarted romance, from lust to frustration to resignation. The first, Perfect Lover, is the best, as Hynde’s peerless, steely-vulnerable voice sighs, "I’ve found my perfect lover but he’s only half my age / He was learning how to stand when I was wearing my first wedding band". Like Kid, it’s a Hynde classic which drips with controlled angst and sparkles with dry wit.

The whole album turns the conventional Lolita complex on its head, and once everyone’s assimilated the shock, it may turn out to be a feminist landmark. Mostly rock-pop with a dash of country, it’s adequate music with outstanding lyrical/vocal garnish. There is, however, one problem. And that’s Jones. His grizzly, whiskey-soused voice often comes crashing in over Chrissie’s, like a Primark Tom Waits/Kelly Jones. He’s okay on his own, but the duets jar and leave you wishing he’d just let the queen of singing sing. He’s Yoko to her John.

That said, songs like the superb, soaring Australia, If You Let Me and Courage are fiery and flush. You can’t fake emotion like this, and the odd couple have it in spades. Catharsis for them, Catherine Wheels for us.

Having followed Ms Hyndes career for over 30 years I was pleased the read the hype swirling around this recording- a collaboration between one of the most revered female artists and her new boy on the block J P Jones. A document of their creative relationship -summed up on the excellent Perfect Lover. Perfect song writing and performances throughout and even a Christmas song. I will be buying more copies to put under my friends trees this year.

This is the best album I have heard in a long, long time. Since the early Eighties, Chrissie had been my favourite female vocalist and I have liked (but not necessarily loved) all her material, some of which, Life in my Veins, Talk of the Town, Kid are in my all time Top 10. But this collection of songs moves her into an entirely different genre, and wow are they inspiring. Read the main Amazon review if you need the background, but suffice to say the love story played out in front of us is raw, gritty, with oodles of paasion and a touch of kitchen sink drama thrown in too. The music is in the main slow, a bit lazy (in a good way), a bit country. We are treated to Chrissie's golden voice with JP's hoarse gravelly tones laid on top. I disagree with the main reviewer about JP. I think his voice adds an edge to this album and contrasts really well with Chrissie's. But then again I love the lead singer of the Stereophonics! My favourite song is Meanwhile, but there are loads of absolute gems here. It gets better as you play it more. Buy the Cd so you get the sleeve notes and lyrics. Chrissie looks and sounds like a woman half her age... I'm looking forward to my fifties..

Having been a Pretenders fan for over 30 years(!), I was a bit hesitant about this album at first. It took a few plays on 'Spotify' before it grew on me, now I listen to it everyday! Just love JP's gravelly tones, whilst Chrissie's voice just improves with age. The songs are so poignant especially when you know the true love story behind them. You can almost hear hearts breaking on 'Meanwhile' and 'Never Drink Again'. Lets hope there's lots more to come from this collaboration.
