This is a 'how-to' book on writing fiction. Chapters deal with plot, inference, character, conflict, dialogue and setting amongst other things and provide some exercises to encourage readers to begin writing themselves. It says in the introduction that this is a book either to read straight through or to dip into as and when you require. Some of the material is common sense, at least to anyone already writing creatively but much of it will be new to beginners.
I had the feeling the material in this book was better aimed at those intending to write a novel rather than short fiction. Those wanting to write for the magazine market would do well to study the market for themselves. I'm not sure the magazines mentioned in the book do take twist ending stories.

Suzanne Ruthven: Author of Life-Writes and The Country Writer’s Craft
As it says on the cover, ‘Fiction – The Art and Craft’ is a highly practical exposition of the major elements of fiction – in short it unveils the mystery of why so many first novels are rejected by publishers. And Colin Bulman is the man to guide us through the highways and byways (not to mention the minefields) of writing successful fiction. Former tutor of English and creative writing at the University of Huddersfield, he is also a tutor for the Writers Bureau and the Writer’s Home Study Correspondence School. In this compact 200-page book there are chapters on plot, conflict, suspense, character and dialogue, together with useful exercises and research suggestions – so if you’re bogged down with an existing novel, or just starting to write one, this is the book for you.
