I can't believe this series is up to book 39 and hasn't lost the spark that makes it so wonderful.

With this edition, we get to see so many familiar faces we've been introduced to over the years and it was wonderful to 'catch up' in a way with all of them. Yes, there was a case, and yes, it was interesting, but for me, it's the characters that really drive this series and make it so addictive - not least of all Eve and Roake.

I love reading about their relationship and realising how much it's evolved over the course of the series. I love looking at them as characters, both individually and as a couple, and seeing how far they've come and how much they've grown. This book really made it clear how they're both in a much better, much healthier place than they were in the beginning and made me nostalgic enough to start planning a massive re-read of all of the books that have come before.

Read this in sitting.Great story ,only cottoned on to whodunit right at the end.Nora's back on form with this one,as I thought the previous one was so "off" I suspected someone else had written it.Lots of twists,Peabody is on form ,Roarke ,oh yes.....he's on form too and all the usual team are involved.Basically,Trainer at the gym gets bumped off.Turns out he is not a nice man at all.Plenty of suspects in the mix.Its Xmas, and Eve has to fulfill a promise to Summerset to actually do stuff this year. She does, she's getting a bit better at this shopping for presents lark! So ,with a murder and a Xmas party she has to "help" organise. Eve is really ,really busy. And as for Peabody's Xmas present !! Pure genius. Loved this instalment.

Had been waiting with baited breath for this to come out and whilst I enjoyed it the story was quite weak. It was good to see all the old crowd there but it was a much simpler case than usual and was extremely predictable, I guessed several chapters before the end!

I was really looking forward to this book as I've read all the "In Death" series. However, after a slow start and far too long dragging through the boring details of their holiday party, Eve finally works out whodunnit. This book is easy to put down and difficult to pick up again - the plot drags on with no excitement to liven it up. Please JDRobb either stop writing any more in this series or go back to the earlier formulae with action, suspense, stirring sex scenes and thrills!

When you open a J.D. Robb novel you know exactly what to expect and it doesn't disappoint. Perfect for a Christmas read, lots of feel-good factors here, JD Robb does this so well. Ok, there is a bit of the sameness about the stories but that's what I want. All the characters are in it, the sumptuousness of Roarke's house, the usual quirks that pop up in their lives, Peabody and her wonderful outlook on life and her weirdly clad but adoring husband, McNab. It is more character than plot led this time, which makes it even more laid back. Like eating chocolate, sweet, comforting, always tastes good. I don't know how much longer this series can go on - as another reviewer commented - they must be getting old! I, certainly, have aged in the years I've been reading this series. Luckily I have started reading a new series of books that looks like lasting - just finished the sequel to That One May Smile, Close Ranks. Both very good and I think Valerie Keogh will be a good successor to JD Robb.

Maybe I'm expecting too much, but Robb seems to have lost any interest in this series. The past dozen books or so in the series have all just been going through the motions. If you really like the characters, that might be a reason to read this book, but if you're looking for a good, creative mystery, this isn't it.

I own the books and some are good, some are excellent. This one? How old is Peabody?? Some of the dialogue reads like she's between twelve and nineteen! She admires clothing, cosmetics, real food etc etc but where is the serious side or police work? This sidekick/fan of Eve is getting old, after all I seem to remember she became a detective some time ago? Her role completely stagnated in this book, hence only three stars.

I read 25% of this book and ditched it .
My wife finished it , but only by skipping pages and sometimes whole chapters .
She says the only thing that redeemed it slightly was the fact that it was Christmas and more pages than usual were about Roarke and Dallas at home .
I am not a newcomer to J.D. Robbs books , but have not read any for the last couple of years .
She seems to have a template now for a book , and only changes characters , and may I say ridiculous ones at that !
Eve has been married to a " squillionaire " for two years and we are meant to believe she is the same cold bitch that he first met.
Certainly her language has got worse .
JD Robb is cheating now .
No the wonder she can writer's many books a year .
