The Festal Menaion
The Festal Menaion contains the services for nine feasts in the Orthodox Church’s liturgical cycle. In this translation the full texts of the services are reproduced including the scripture readings (taken from the Authorised Version). The book contains a valuable introduction by Professor Georges Florovsky entitled “The Worshipping Church” which gives brief introduction to the key elements of Orthodox worship and the theology of the church.
As well as the texts of the feasts the Menaion also contains a plan of each of the services (Great Vespers, Matins the Hours and the Divine Liturgy) in which the texts of the Menaion are inserted. At the end of the Menaion are useful appendices with the Septuagint numbering of the Psalms and the order of its recitation, a description of the service books of the church and a glossary of Greek and Russian liturgical terminology.
Study of the feasts of the Church helps us to understand and to act out the Christian life. Theology and worship are not separate disciplines, what we believe we express, not simply in our church services but in our daily lives. This book is therefore an indispensable aid to both the study and practice of the worship of the Orthodox Church.

This book is a must for Eastern Orthodox Christians. I am Antiocian Orthodox and it is important for me to have this book. It was translated from the orginal Greek into English by Mother Mary and Archimandrite (now Metropolitan) Kallistos Ware. It covers certain Orthodox Services and their meanings, structure and more. It gives explanation to the services contained with in it. There are other Menaions available, but the one I have purchased is the Festal Menaion. 'Festal meaning Feast' And I am glad I bought it.

HASH(0x9a8a915c) out of 5 stars be prepared 28 Dec. 2007

I bought this to prepare for all of the great Orthodox Christian feasts. Unless you attend a monastery for the feast services chances are your local parish does not do all the services. It is great to read all of the service before going to the feast day liturgy. For an Orthodox Christian the holy services are the back bone of the faith. It is amazing how deep and rich the festal hymns are.

HASH(0x9a8a978c) out of 5 stars A Standard 14 Jan. 2013
By Kindle Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
An English-language standard for any Orthodox church and beneficial to any home choosing to more fully participate in the collective services of the Church. Television advertisers would be aghast, if rather than perceiving liturgical services as a chore or duty, when homes and families approach the prayers as refreshment and nourishment from the tedium of daily life.
