Watch Trailer

Wade Porter lives a modest but comfortable life with a young family, a fledgling business and a promising future ahead. But in an instant, his life, and that of everyone he loves is threatened and possibly gone forever when he's convicted of killing a man while protecting his fiancée, Laura, and their three year old son. In just 24 hours, the unimaginable conditions of a new world order begin to take hold. Violence is the answer to everything and, even for Laura, what it means to fight for your life--alone--becomes all too real. Sentenced to Corcoran State Prison, Wade ends up in a hellish facility run by Lt. William Jackson, known as the SHU (Security Housing Unit) where the inmates are brutal but far less deadly than the guards. His cellmate, John Smith, is a stone cold prison legend, a 'lifer' and a man once devastated so completely that he has nothing left to lose and acts accordingly. An unlikely bond develops between the two men as Wade struggles to survive, having to put his own life--and the possibility of ever being freed--in relentless jeopardy.

Well, try not to end up in ANY prison! This film depicts the events that could occur from one unlucky situation happening in the middle of the night. Stephen Dorff plays construction business owner Wade Porter who seems to have a decent future ahead. He's just been approved for a loan for his business, his wife and young son are happy at home. One night a burglar is discovered in the room of Porter's son. This leads to confrontation between the burglar and Porter resulting in the death of the burglar. Porter is then sentenced to three years imprisonment and the nightmare begins.

Val Kilmer also stars in this film and plays mass murderer John Smith. Nate Parker provides a fine performance in his role as Officer James Collins, questioning the ethics of Lieutenant Jackson played by Harold Perrineau.

The harsh realities of life in a US jail are on display here. I didn't really like the ending as it seemed too convenient and I feel unrealistic.

A fine film on the whole, worth a watch.

I read on an internet message board that someone said about `Felon' and how it's "The best film ever to go straight to DVD."

Well, I'm not sure it's the best ever, but I kind of know where that quote came from. It is damn good. However, it is also very BLEAK. Wow, is it depressing from time to time. It is dark, gritty, nasty, sad, frustrating and then all of those again.

It tells the story of a decent family man who (sort of) accidentally kills a burglar one night and gets sent to prison. There he must learn the inner workings of the new `society' he finds himself in. Many people may draw parallels with the excellent `Shawshank Redemption.' Yes, they are both about similar subject matter, but they're both very different. Felon uses a lot of handheld camerawork, giving it a deliberately amateur `documentary' feel to it, which adds to the realism.

Just like Shawshank, Felon has no `weak links' when it comes to its actors. I don't normally think much of Val Kilmer, but here he plays his part well and you'll find you have sympathy for everyone here, even some people you think you may not normally like.

All it all, Felon is a great little movie. It probably should have got a full theatrical release, but its sombre tone may well alienate the general populous. If you're in the mood for something dark then you'll probably appreciate this.

Excellence storyline.

to think this is based on true story is mind-blowing.

He was the chosen one to have that kind of patch. After that experience he's a strong guy with incredible good heart.

Very good movie, good picture, good acting, good ending.

No problem with the delivery and as for price its worth the additional to DVD collection.

After accidently killing the burglar who broke into his home, even though the burglar was running away, Wade is arrested. After being sentenced to 3 years in a maximum security prison, in SHU I believe, he learns he needs to toughen up. He has to share a cell with mass murder, John, who isn't as bad as his crime is depicted and who teaches Wade a lesson or two on reality and life!

A friend recommended this to me and I'm glad she did. It was an interesting watch, not what I was expecting at all. I googled it afterwards as I was intrigued and found out it was based on events that happened in a Californian prison in the 90s. The ending was touching and nearly brought a tear to my eyes.

Construction business owner Wade Porter(Stephen Dorff)accidentally kills a home intruder and is sentenced to three years in a maximum security prison. There he is cellmates with notorious mass killer John Smith(Val Kilmer)all the while trying to stay under the radar and out of the clutches of sadistic head guard Jackson(Harold Perrinau).
Uncompromising but riveting and brilliantly shaded prison drama is head and shoulders the best release from Sony's Fight Factory Series.Dorff is terrific as is Kilmer and with a supporting cast numbering Sam Shepard,Anne Archer and crucially Marisol Nichols as Porter's partner, writer and director Waugh's pungent, beautifully layered script is given it's full justice.Felon makes Oz look like a cartoon as it plays out it's hand of being a subtle indictment of the U.S penal system,a detailed character piece and a brutal actioner with some skill.
Remarkably cliche free, it can be excused going a little crowd pleasing in the final act because Felon is both superb entertainment and a thoughtful examination of how somebody's humanity and resolve can be severely tested after making one mistake in a largely good life and the consequences that are meted out by a system that only cares about the system.
A knockout of a film and deserves to be better known.
The one extra is a short docu which shows just how far Waugh was prepared to go to make Felon as realistic as possible.

Watched this last night and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Dont let the tacky synopsis written by amazon put you off, this isnt some cheap 'Vin Diesel' style punch-fest, this is actually a very gruesome look at life in a top-security prison (albeit with some action movie elements thrown in). This is obviously no shawshank redemption but it is a well acted, enjoyable and believable movie. Highly recommended!.. Also couldn'd believe that John Smith, the mass murderer, was played by Val Kilmer.. he was completely unrecognisable! Anyway go buy this as its excellent.
