Top customer reviews
Personally I am impressed and I think it is better than a standard mouse mat. The only negative thing is the noise of the mouse moving on the mouse pad. It is quite noisy and some might find it distracting or annoying, especially if you work in a quiet office. For this reason I give it 3 stars - it is very comfortable but the noise of the mouse moving on the pad is too loud so I rate it good but not quite good enough!
The base is a simple sheet of flexible plastic with a thin mouse pad on top but the real feature is the wrist rest made from a flexible silicon-like plastic. The provides a supportive yet flexible wrist pad and it's easy to move your wrist freely as required without any discomfort. Bearing in mind I spend up to 16 hours per day using a mouse for intricate video editing, I've often been prone to an aching and sometimes numb-feeling wrist at the end of the day.
On receiving this, I instantly swapped it with my old and rather worn gel pad and set to work. The fact I've been working freely for the last 11 hours without any break and no wrist discomfort at all proves that it works.
I think in hot weather it may become a bit sticky and sweaty but that's not a problem because it can simply be wiped clean.
Sometimes the simple ideas are the best and this is one of those so very simple ideas that works. Well done Fellowes!
Have used this for a week or two now.
On opening, looks stylish and apple-like from the top.
Not so pretty from the sides. Not ugly though
It is comfortable and assists in preventing aching wrists.
This is slightly more expensive than Fellowes Crystals Gel Mouse Pad/Wrist Support - Purple at the time of review.
I would have to say the Purple Gel one is a little more comfortable and looks slightly better. (and cheaper too.)
It is an acceptable wrist rest.
So this alternative design has something to live up to. To put it through its paces I've used it every day at work for 8 hours a day for about 2 weeks.
So the actual mat, the bit where the mouse moves about, is very thin flexible plastic that has very low friction due to the microscopic dimpled surface that optical mice thrive on; certainly my mouse experiences no "drag factor" was I move it about, nor jitter either. Being plastic it's also wipe-clean, something not the case with material-finished, coffee-stained gel mouse-mat I'm using at home.
So let's talk about the wrist-rest. It's made out of a very flexible white plastic that feels almost rubbery. Although it's nicely flexible, the internal construction (you can see the interal supports in the picture) ensures that it does not lose shape, even with my huge wrists on it. I've just checked it again and I can almost see a minor indentation in the top surface where I lay my wrist. I say "almost" because it's so minor that it even be a trick of the light. So no deformity there.
It's neither hot nor cold; it has that preculiar property of just feeling slighly cooler than room temperature, a not unpleasant experience. It causes no sweating under my wrist (you might think plastic on close contact to skin would cause this, but not here).
So why no 5-stars?
Well the wrist-rest seems to be just cut off a much longer length of extruded plastic and, whilst it's all cut to shape and angled to match the mouse mat, it just seems, to me, a bit unfinished. A soft, matching end-cap that didn't fall out would have made it a superior product and worthy of 5 stars.
If you're less fussy about the slightly DIY / industrial design (or actively like that sort of look) then there's really nothing (else) I can knock points off for.
It works as an optical mouse mat, it supports my wrist, doesn't feel hot (nor too cold), is the right size and can be wiped clean. I like it because "it just works" and use it every day for several hours per day so it must be doing something right!
