Review

A gobsmacking recording...Kristian Bezuidenhout, the finest living exponent of the intimate and infinitely versatile fortepiano...With the breathtaking performances on this recording, revelatory at every turn of the young genius of Mendelssohn, I can only urge serious music lovers to get out, get hold of this, and prepare to have your ears refreshed and your mind opened anew. --Michael Tumelty, The Herald, 15 August 2011

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars for PERFORMANCE, not compositions 6 Oct. 2011
By danbcarson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
As stated in the title, my five star rating is not for the quality of the pieces themselves, but rather for the performance. The playing of Bezuidenhout and Von der Goltz, in collaboration with the Freiburger Barockorchester, on this disc is in tune, clean, emotional, and carefully thought out. Harmonia Mundi is usually a good choice for period performance, especially for cleanliness and technical proficiency. For me, excellent technical execution is a prerequisite for any classical performance, ESPECIALLY intonation, so Harmonia Mundi is the perfect classical music label.

Historically, this record is an interesting piece to add to any classical music lover's collection. These are both very early pieces of Mendelssohn, and it is very fascinating to me to compare these pieces with his more mature works. I will reserve most of my opinions about the pieces, because I figure most people would not buy a CD without knowing the pieces on them and deciding that, for quality of music or performance, it is worth purchasing. I will only say that, to me, these pieces are very basic, repetitive, and usually lack nuance. But it is certainly music worth exploring. All music deserves a chance :)

In short: clean, musical (essentially great) performance; you be the judge of the music. If you are fascinated with period performance, this is a great disc to have.

Happy listening!

5.0 out of 5 stars PIECES DE JEUNESSE 18 Oct. 2011
By PVP - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD

5.0 out of 5 stars Just so entertaining 30 Mar. 2013
By Peter MacArthur - Published on Amazon.com

This piece, written when Mendelssohn was just a boy, is brilliantly played by these musicians, truly a masterwork when represented in this way. Well worth the purchase if only for the remarkable playing by the truly accomplished musicians and written by a true prodigy. Felix at the age of 14. piano and strings (1822) piano, violin and orchestra (1823).
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Sound! Fantastic Playing! A must own Concerto CD 3 Jun. 2015
By Jeffrey M. Wagner - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Without a doubt one of the best sounding recordings on Red Book CD I own. It surpasses some of my SACD collection in general imaging and tone. It doesn't have the clarity in congested passages that SACD does but still an amazing sounding cd. Performances are fantastic. The playing is very well phrased and moves effortlessly. A great disc to demo that new stereo component.

4.0 out of 5 stars The disc needed a quick cleaning, but otherwise was good. 31 May 2014
By Robert B. Vincelette Jr. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The disc skipped on the first track, but that turned out to be caused by a smudge that I remedied with one of those CD cleaners that does not grind and polish. Now it works perfectly.
But more important, it is a great performance by both pianists, the violinist and the orchestra.
