While you can read this as just a development of events surrounding and following a wedding, on a second level you can look behind the happy family wedding facade to explore the dynamics of various relationships within and outside the family group. Ambition, alcoholism, guilt, love, desire and sacrifice all play their part in the lives of Felicity's family and friends. The novel is well- written with insight into relationships and the long-reaching influence of parents and grandparents. For example, Caroline is unable to forget her mother's comment about reparation. Do any remarks of your mother haunt you? I know I find myself repeating phrases from childhood. I enjoyed the book and was left reflecting about the choices people make.
Felicity is about to get married. She has everything, doting parents, handsome bridegroom, welcoming mother-in-law. On the surface the setting is perfect for an posh and elegant society wedding. But,as in all families, and all good books, the skeletons are rattling in the cupboard and history is waiting to strike. As she hesitates before taking that fatal walk up the aisle she wonders if she can go through with it. The decision she makes will profoundly affect the lives of those she loves, and also have unforeseen consequences that she cannot yet imagine? As the story unfolds the writer brings us into these lives and uncovers the reality behind the facade of Felicity's perfect fairy tale wedding.
