A fabulous collection of short stories, each one a little gem written to scare the pants off the reader. Highly recommended.

Now to indulge in HK Hillman's other short story collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short & Creative Horror! 14 April 2012
By Michael J. Mcfadden - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
If you like your horror reading to be original, and if you like short stories that are indeed short, then Fears should serve you up a good meal! I'm giving it five stars because of the quality of the material, but wish it had been a bit longer... either a few more stories or perhaps even a few that were given fuller treatment. Hillman has a "horror creative genius" that rivals King and the best of them and the gems that he creates are solid and perfect enough that they cry to be nurtured into full blown sculptures.

Still, despite my frustrations about the lengths of the offerings, I thoroughly enjoyed every one of them and that's why this book deserves its five stars! For anyone tired of what they call "formulaic" horror, this is worth checking out: it's definitely NOT "formulaic"! A worthy companion to his previous Dark Thoughts and Demons

5.0 out of 5 stars Go here for some real chills and thrills. 18 April 2012
By T. L. Barrett - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Fears of the Old and the New is just that: a curious and marvelous mixture of sci-fi thrills and gothic chills (sometimes in the very same yarn). H K Hillman really has the stuff. Each one of these little gems kept me reading and ready to devour the next one. What a treat to finally read a collection where the author knows he's there to entertain, and successfully does so. I loved so many of these stories it would be impossible to give the work anything but five stars. I'm not going to go in to detail about any of them and risk spoiling the fun of discovery for others. One does feel that many of these stories would be done better justice as full length novels, but that doesn't pull back the punch of any. In fact, I believe it attests to the writer's power that the stories held such resonance as short as most of them were. Hillman's style is rather straightforward, which allows his creativity to shine through in each tale. If you love the Twilight Zone, Stephen King or just a good campfire tale, then you will adore this collection. Let's face it, not all of us can devote time to a new writer's six hundred page work- Fears of the Old and the New is just the quick read you are looking for. We all want to discover a great goto writer that can deliver. Give this collection a read, you'll know what I do: H K Hillman is it.
