A harmless and friendly Martian (Christopher Lloyd) crash-lands into the life of failed TV reporter Tim (Jeff Daniels). Initially Tim wants to make his fortune writing an expose on the alien, but ultimately decides to help his new-found friend. However, even with Tim's help, will 'Uncle Martin' be able to travel safely home before the world becomes aware of his existence?
Tired but watchable adaptation of the popular 60s TV show of a friendly Martian who lives with an agreeable earthling. Like Disney's other live-action remakes 101 Dalmatians and Flubber, the emphasis is on quick-moving scenes and special effects--not character. Jeff Daniels is the bemused earthling who gets to know Christopher Lloyd's alien ways. Much of the film feels like a retread borrowing heavily from other sci-fi comedies (and "fish out of water" films), including Lloyd's own Back to the Future. Lloyd and his talking space suit (voiced by Wayne Knight who brings the same personality as his Newman role on Seinfeld) don't know simple Earth customs but inexplicably know every pop culture reference in the last 10 years. Daryl Hannah and Elizabeth Hurley are along for the ride as Daniels' good-girl and bad-girl flames. TV's Martian, Ray Waltson, shows up as a secret agent alien hunter--and pours more emotion into his scenes than the rest of the movie combined. Ages 6 and up. --Doug Thomas

If Disney are going to do sci-fi it's better they do it this way rather than the p s poor John Carter or The Black Hole.
The cast all happily ham it up for 90 mins, and as usual Christopher Lloyd is OTT/ grating and irritating - I'd hate to have to watch more than one of his films in a month.
A nice touch having Ray Walston from the original series in a cameo
All the original characters are in the movie and some added characters to round it off. I appreciated the method used buy Coleye (Wallace Shawn) to test for alien residue. By the way if his first name was Ernest, he could be "E. Coleye." Jeff Daniels made a believable Tim O'Hara. And it was a nice touch to put the late Ray Walston (the original Martian) in this picture as the investigator.
This film is a laugh a minute and so realistic. They must have hired Dave Barry for their science advisor. Sharon 'Mae' West the real script supervisor also was script supervisor for "Twin Peaks" (1990) If you do not see this movie to the very end you will miss the whole point.
