This not my normal genre of book reading, but the author Paul is a friend of my, an ex work colleague.

I found the book, very interesting to read, interesting characters all with human flaws.

The author writes with emotional descriptive narrative and gets you in the heart and mind with this storyline

A top read - action, character, humour and a compelling story!

My kind of book. Joey is our main character and a barman. I do like visiting bars in my reading, you get to meet plenty of interesting people, you get to eavesdrop on conversations and you see people make fools of themselves when the alcohol intake exceeds common sense. They are often places of tension and confrontation. As a barman, attentive and sober you can observe people when they are otherwise distracted.

Joey has a temper. His partner has left him and taken their son with her. Joey never was good enough for Billie’s family and the fact that she has run home to mummy and daddy rubs salt in the wound. Billie is refusing to let him see Charlie until she has sorted a place to live and Joey and the situation calms down. Billie has concerns over Joey’s temper and with good reason. A phone conversation doesn’t go his way and his phone gets hurled against the wall and smashed. Irrational behaviour and proof that the red mist descends way too often.

Communication between Joey and Billie is strained. She doesn’t always answer his calls and when they do arrange to meet, she sends her dad instead to explain the situation. They are having two different conversations. What Joey hears in his head is that the separation is temporary and that he can fix the situation with money. Money will solve all the problems in their relationship because the cause of the tension and the fights and the arguments comes from the pressures that a lack of it brings. You don’t feel that Billie feels the same way. Joey’s current problem is how to get some.

In his work, Joey is calm and rational and polite to customers. He respects the working girls that frequent the bar, picking up business when the shift workers pile in the bar at the end of the day mainly from Bell’s.

Adam Bell is the son of the boss and the fatboy and one of the bar’s best customers. Rude and racist and with a sense of entitlement that having money brings. Joey is an easy target for his prejudices.

Hey, sp**, get me a drink. The racial epithet changed on an almost nightly basis.

Hey, b**ner. Hey, w**b**k.

Joey sucks it all up, for a while at least. He has a plan. Working with Lynne, Fatboy’s favourite squeeze, he may get to teach Adam some manners and relieve the Bell family of some green and lo and behold every problem in his life is going to be fixed……… Yeah, right.

Great story, interesting characters. I quite liked Joey despite his faults and I was keen to see if he comes out ahead. There are some fantastic scenes and some enjoyable dialogue involving Joey and his nemesis Fatboy. With the plan in action the tension between the pair escalates.

114 pages long – a perfect length for this kind of tale. A tick in every box for - setting, story, pace, characters, confrontation, action and outcome. Plus there’s a sprinkling of black humour in the piece, especially in the verbal jousting between our two main combatants.

Paul Heatley is the author of a fair few novellas.
The two I have enjoyed so far are The Motel Whore and The Vampire – both very dark reads.
Plenty more await me – An Eye For An Eye, The Pitbull, The Mess, Three and The Boy.

Classic noir

After his girlfriend, Billie, leaves and takes their young son with her, hot-tempered barman Joey Hidalgo is left alone in the trailer that they formerly called home, with nothing to do but get drunk and try to figure out where it all went wrong. Convinced that the only thing he needs to win Billie over is money, Joey hatches a simple plan to get his life back on track, and get revenge against his tormentor (the eponymous FatBoy) – a morbidly obese regular customer with a penchant for racist abuse. Enlisting Lynne, a skeletal hooker who hangs out at the dive bar he works at, to help him with his plan, Joey is about to find out exactly how far he is willing to go to get his family back…
Paul Heatley’s grim, gripping An Eye For An Eye (Near To The Knuckle) was one of my favourite books of last year. It blended raw violence and visceral thrills to terrific effect, and is well worth seeking out. Heatley’s hot streak continues with FatBoy, a US-set noir that matches its predecessor blow for bloody blow. The plot may sound deceptively simple, but – in tried and trusted noir style – Joey’s scam spirals dangerously out of control and plunges him into a grisly, hellish nightmare.
Boasting great characterisation and pitch-perfect prose, FatBoy is a well-judged excursion into classic noir territory. Another excellent crime novella from the All Due Respect production line.

The Big Plan

The big plan. The one that is going to fix everything for Joey. Bring his wife and his boy back, let him quit his mindless job, and get out of the damn trailer. Everything he needs to fix where his life has spun out of control. It seems simple enough, what could possibly go wrong?

I am not going to spoil any of the plot, this story was very clever and I was pleased to see it go somewhere I had not expected. The writing is crisp and the story was very well done, the plot has some turns and thrills that will leave you breathless and waiting for the next page, a very good modern crime novel.

Everyone knows a fatboy. Something like Sheldon's Personality Theory may suggest they should be fun-loving, sociable, and tolerant, but Heatley's characterization is quick to show why this ridiculous theory was rejected so long ago. Money and ignorance can highlight the worst in people, regardless of body type.

The descriptions of action and setting were phenomenal, and it was great to see the build to what ended up being a great finish. The comfortable language used in the narrative and dialogue helps pull you into the story and join Joey in his quest to make things right in his life. Right for his family.

Be prepared, though, the simplest plans can sometimes run into problems. Lucky you.

Joey has had enough. His girlfriend has left him, taking their young son with her. He comes close to losing a bar job that he hates, and he is regularly verbally abused by one of his customers, a local big shot.

So he hits on a plan that will sort everything out. Of course, in true noir fashion, it’s not as easy as he thinks.

Paul Heatley’s Fatboy is brilliant. A perfect example of smalltown noir worthy of Jim Thompson or Dave Zeltserman. Highly recommended.

It's always fun to root for a loser

It's always fun to root for a loser, especially when he goes off the rails and you're with him all the way. Heatley writes mean and lean, the way I like it, and everything follows with its own mad logic, no diversions. This is a fun read.
