What I came to realise in reading this book is what McDonald's or KFC or Taco Bell might like to call food isn't actually food. The meat isn't meat, the bread isn't bread and the fries certainly aren't fries. As I said, this has had a profound affect on my eating habits, and I haven't touched fast food for over two years. Sometimes the convenience of picking up a Big Mac and fries when you are out is almost overwhelming, but several times I've gone hungry rather than break my promise to myself of staying away from this non-food.
But if you were looking for a book which grabs you and keeps you glued to it's pages then this might not be for you.
Albeit a bit dated the shock factor is still very much present in this book, but by god does it take a hell of a long time to get to the point, and reading this book is further worsened by the lack of cronological order of events even within the same subject area. One minute you're getting the back story to a person or business, the next you're on a tangent which is semi relevant and in another time some years beforehand or after the personal narrative was set. I found each of the narratives half finished as the tangents usually took over. And at times a tangent might dominate the chapter. Which goes against the whole point of a chapter!
This book also alternates between casual reading and in depth analysis, which means that this is neither a casual read or a deep insight into the industries .
I've just finished reading around 8 books based around the subject of World War 2, from Schindler's List to the Pianist. And I can honestly say that reading those 8 books was easier and more comfortable to read than reading this.
Set the damn pace. Set the scene for each chapter. Don't go off on tangents which are more than a page long. Don't suddenly go from casual slating , to biography to analytical business !
Thank you for reading!
Anyone wishing to opt out of the fast food culture read this book now!
This is probably the 4th copy I've purchased as when I lend it out I never get it back due to it being a good damn read - one of the "unputtable" down books.
It also explains the environmental, economic and social impacts of these consumption patterns.
The film "Food inc." is based on this book.
A must read for those interesting of knowing how fast food is prepared, quality standards and how consumers can make a difference with their everyday food choices.
What has already happened in the fast food industry is probably the blueprint that most corporations would like to emulate if they could. The fast food industry lends itself particularly well to the explotation of suppliers, young employeees and the consumers who are unwittingly snared by the wholesome images and the artificially enhanced flavours.
This book will open your eyes to a world you may not be aware existed.
Constant references to Beef patties and French fries did make me want a burger though!
