In the middle of rural France there's a castle where two attractive females - Eva and Elisabeth -waste away their days, waiting for some initially unspecified event. Elsewhere a group of bandits have robbed some poor sod carrying a fortune in gold and are about to make off with it when an argument splits their group and Marc makes off with the bag having betrayed his fellow criminals. After a struggle with his hostage he is located in the woodland by the other thieves and is forced to take refuge in the aforementioned castle, where he meets the two girls. Threatening them with his, er, gun the women appear to be distinctly unperturbed by his aggressive attitude towards them. Meanwhile the other bandits are keeping a safe distance from the castle effectively preventing Marc from leaving while waiting for their chance to launch an attack. It becomes apparent that Eva and Elisabeth are awaiting the arrival of a posse of bourgeois females in the middle of the night for some sort of ritualistic meeting. Unable to leave due to the gun-toting bandits outside and now unwilling to leave anyway due to a notable degree of sexual enticement from Eva, Marc is destined to be swept up in the strange activities that are about to take place in the castle... The most suitable approach to Rollin's work is to forget about cinematic convention, remove expectation of complete verisimilitude, and sit back to witness the strange events of a place that surely can't exist. Fascination is actually a better starting point than many of his other films and one of his best all round.Read more ›

I often feel that French erohorror director Jean Rollin is more interested in creating artful mysterious erotica than he is in telling compelling stories and generally what 'keeps me awake' during some of his inanely meandering films is the presence of numerous attractive unclothed young French girlz. The film 'Fascination' is unique in that it actually has a very simple sequential sort of plot line AND a lot of naked girlz. A petty thief on the run from his own gang (who he is looking to double cross) takes refuge in a chateauesque mansion and stumbles upon a coven of upper society women who drink blood in order to stave off anemia & remain beautiful. Initially the chateau is inhabited by only two young lesbian women (Brigitte Lahaie and Francka Mai) and they play cat & mouse with the handsome robber until all the ladies arrive at midnight and things get interesting. As usual, 'get interesting' in a Rollin flik means that more girlz take their clothes off and attack whatever hapless folk are in their vicinity. The actresses are all gorgeous and get naked a lot, and the actor playing the thief is likable enuf that this Rollin effort moves right along to its' enigmatic conclusion - making it one of his more 'watchable' features.
The version I purchased was the non-BluRay disk from Redemption and it provided a nice clean picture & a few 'extras'. This version runs 81 min. and I've noted that there is a 90 min. version available from Amazon.UK that purports to be 'fully' uncut/uncensored ... I'd be curious to know what the additional 9 min contains - if anyone has viewed 'that' version and would be willing to report their experience.

Once again Salvation(Redemption)prove themselves to be one of the few UK horror labels who actually care about the quality of their films, bringing Jean Rollin's excellent Fascination onto region 2 DVD in a beautiful widescreen print. Great film. Great DVD. Uncut.

This is one of Jean Rollin's more successful erotic Vampire tales. It features the very wonderful Brigitte Lahaie at her most seductive.
However I am most disappointed that it is not the full version. Why the 80 second credit sequence with Brigitte & friend dancing to a gramophone record has been removed is beyond me. Particularly as it is there on a much older videotape (also by Redemption) that I have.

The blu-ray of Fascination is excellent. It is brighter and much clearer than the old DVD, and the colours are amazing. It was liking watching the film for the first time.

Good extras too including a booklet, trailers and Mondo Macabro documentary on French horror/Jean Rollin.
