Amazon Review

A lazy and fat farmer spends all day in bed, eating chocolates and reading the newspaper, while his poor duck has to do all the work on the farm. One evening, the exhausted duck collapses in tears, to be comforted by chickens. The farm animals are very fond of the duck, and outraged by the farmer's behaviour, so they hatch a plan.

This engaging cross between Cinderella and George Orwell's Animal Farm, won the Smarties Book Prize, was British Book Awards Children's Illustrated Book of the Year and was also Highly Commended for the Kate Greenaway Medal. (Ages 4 to 8)--Lisa Gee

A Big Book edition is also available.

Review

This book will be bought for years. The Independent on Sunday Marvellously expressive pictures and a satisfying text make this the outstanding picture book of the year. The Sunday Times Helen Oxenbury's illustrations speak volumes... They're a perfect match for Martin Waddell's equally excellent text. Books for Keeps

A sensitive story about exploitation which will be understood by the very youngest of children: downtrodden Duck works for gluttonous, lazy Farmer until his friends plan a rebellion on his behalf. The language is lyrical, the illustrations beautiful, and my children loved it!

My mum bought this book for my brother when he was young as he was a great lover of ducks! I can remember sitting down to read it, one of his first words was "quack." Even now, as an adult of almost 27, my mum will telephone me and ask "How goes the work?"

This is a fantastic book, with catchy phrases, a great storyline and lovely pictures that children are sure to enjoy. It has certainly made it into my collection of happy childhood memories!

Let's face it; who wants to be discussing Hegelian dialectic with a three year old? This is a good way to introduce Marxism to the kids - or indeed anyone with a limited intellect - without that messy business at the end of Animal Farm. Socialist utopian fun for all the family.

The illustrations in this book are delightful. The story is simple enough for a two year old with the repetition - my granddaughter has made the storyline into a game in which she asks me 'how goes the work' and I have to quack when I am busy.
As she has matured she loves it more as she grasps the concept - telling me that 'I'm like Farmer Duck' when I asked her to do something the other day and she thought I was doing nothing like the lazy farmer. I do wonder if the farmer was depressed though..must be something to do with the state of farming today? It's still one of our favourites along with fix it duck and the three billy goats fluff.

When I was a child I had this book and I think it is brilliant. It's very like a children's version of Animal Farm, which in my opinion is really good. When I read Animal Farm a couple of years ago I kept thinking of this book. I still find myself quoting it now, 'How goes the work?'. I fully intend to buy this book for my children if it is still being printed by then!
A brilliant children's book.

Bought for the grandchildren aged 6 and 3 for Christmas 2014. The greeting from both of them every time they come on the phone is now: 'how goes the work?'. They LOVE the book and so do I! Great bit of covert trade unionism!
