Top Customer Reviews

By Clare O'Beara TOP 500 REVIEWER on 8 April 2017
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
The tale starts in an Oliver Twist style workhouse for boys, and proceeds through a daring escape to an adventure with magical horses. Faris, our nine year old hero, can talk to hoofed animals although as he doesn't meet any he is not aware of the fact. In the time period when this is set, the social services don't make welfare checks and candles are used instead of electricity. Faris is encouraged to try to escape and meets a horse which talks to him, called Jack.

Jack is from a line of magic-using horses which are being hunted by unpleasant gnomes called Spriggans. He and a faerie explain to Faris that they need help before they are all caught or killed.

I found the tale starts well and then takes a turn for the flatter, with explanation heaped upon explanation and Faris doing a lot of sitting, riding or talking rather than being of much use. Towards the end he is involved in a rescue but his main use is to talk to sheep, which horses can't. So that is why I would not give five stars as I would have liked to see Faris, who is resourceful, doing more. He does turn out to be brave and keeps his head in danger. But if you like magical horses, we meet several of them.
