By Parka HALL OF FAMETOP 10 REVIEWER on 28 July 2010
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Length: 0:38 Mins
Fantasy Art Expedition is a starter guide to drawing fantasy characters. It does so in a storytelling manner, as the title of the book suggest, bringing you to different places around the world and drawing the popular fantasy characters in that area. The introductory text for each area and the characters are pretty interesting.

The step-by-step lessons are easy to follow and involve drawing in pencils (no inking), digital colouring using Photoshop or painting colours with traditional medium. The instructions are clear and there are useful little tips here and there.

Well suited for beginners.

I've dealt with Finlay's art tutorials prior to this offering landing and to be honest, he's definitely one who believes in leading from the front in his tutorials. He gives the reader clear, concise and often invaluable information to aid in their creature creation in such a way that you'll find your technique improve with each piece of art that has taken years for established artists like Finlay to learn. It's solid, its easily accessible for those of all artistic ability and its definitely an offering that will help inspire you to reach that next stage in their work. A definite treat for artists of all ages.

Just bought this today at Borders. I like the other books in the series, but this is not redundant in any way. Both entertaining to read and full of good practice exercises. Well worth buying for those seriously interested in fantasy illustration with either pro ambitions or just wants to do their own web-comic/zine stuff.
