'Fantastic Voyage' was a huge success for Lakeside back in the day. The smash hit (U.S. R&B No 1) title track is a funk bomb worthy of anybodies 'Greatest Hits' and is probably the best record the band ever made. With its deep bass 'growl', typical Solar Records smacking groove and awesome, gritty vocals its a must have song for anyone who appreciates late 70's/early 80's funk.

'Your Love Is On The One' was also a hit from the album. Its not quite as good as the title track but if you like the Solar Records sound and haven't heard it (it was not released as a single here in the U.K.) you will want to add it to your collection. 'I Need You' is a slower song. to my mind its the best slowie present here as its a little more imaginative that the more obvious, 'Say Yes'. The latter was the third and final U.S. R&B hit from the album, however, and is highly thought of by most.

The rest of the tracks here are pretty standard 'Solar Records' fare. 'Strung Out' is a fair but lyrically uninspired mid-tempo dance cut while 'Eveready Man' is a less funky so-so album cut. 'I Love Everything You Do' is another slow song and again its just o.k. rather than a killer...

Overall, 'Fantastic Voyage' is about a 7 out of 10 album but if you have not discovered Lakeside before and are wondering whether you should take the plunge or not I would say 'go for it - the title track is worth the price of admission here alone and there are at least two other songs here you will love if the 'Solar Sound' is your bag.
