Gil Renard (Robert De Niro) is a failed knife salesman and San Francisco Giants fanatic, whose wife has put a restraining order on him after he abandoned his son at a match. He becomes obsessed with new player Bobby Rayburn (Wesley Snipes) and when Rayburn has a streak of bad luck, Gil goes over the edge and will stop at nothing to restore his idol's reputation.
Lurid thrillers don't get much more shameless than this movie, in which Robert De Niro plays a pathological baseball fan whose obsession is focused on a San Francisco Giants all-star outfielder (Wesley Snipes). While the newly signed baseball star is having trouble getting his favourite uniform number from a competitive teammate (Benicio Del Toro), De Niro is having career troubles at the knife company his father founded, and you can bet that his proximity to high-quality stainless-steel blades will be a factor in the suspenseful plot. Recycling parts of his maniacal roles in Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy and Cape Fear, De Niro takes his idolatry to violent extremes, eliminating any obstacle to Snipes' stardom until the baseball hero is forced to confront his most terrifying devotee. Directed with brutal excess and souped-up style by Tony Scott (Top Gun, Crimson Tide), this manipulative nail-biter pulls all the right strings in predictable fashion, but it does have moments that are effectively intense. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Robert De Niro plays Gil Renard a knife salesman who's life has been slowly going down the apn ever since he stopped playing baseball as a kid. His wife has left him, his relationship with his kid is unstable, the business that his father built up is slowly deminishing, and just when he thinks it can't get ny worse, he is finally sacked.
The only thing that seems to be good in Gil's life is his great love for baseball. He has been a big fan of the 'Giants' since childhood, his favourite player being Bobby Rayburn. However, his love soon becomes a dangerous obsession and he finds himself doing incredible things so that Bobby can win at all costs.
Robert De Niro is absolutely fantastic in his role as the obsessed baseball fan Gil Renard. In fact he is very good in all of the films where he plays crazed obsessed people, such as 'Taxi Driver', however in this film his acting really is second to none. Wesley Snipes is also very good in his role as baseball player Bobby Rayburn, and his performance is rather overlooked by De Niro's which i think is a shame as he is again, very good. Patti D'Arbanville plays Gil's divorced wife, and Andrew J. Ferchland plays Richie, Gil's son, both are good also in their roles.
Overall, 'The Fan' really is a brilliant movie, which i think has been forgotten amongst others of the same genre. Fans of Robert De Niro or/and Wesley Snipes will love it, as will action/thriller fans in general. If you are looking for a well-acted slightly spooky movie, then look no further.
The best way to sum up The Fan , from a film perspective i think, is that its a baseball orientated take off Micheal Douglas's Falling Down from a few years prior. The story is an interesitng premise, as we follow Gil, his life & how he slowly turns from this man who feels the world is against him, into a monster. As you'd suspect with such a strong main character, It's a film that leaves you with one overidng memory, the big performance once again from Robert De Niro (Goodfellas). With his menacing & unhinged character , as he reprises yet another of his psycho roles akin to Travis Bickle (Txi Driver), Rupert Pupkin (The King of Comedy) or Max Cady (Cape Fear). Wesley Snipes (Blade) does really well in support, one of his best performances. While John Leguizamo (Romeo + Juliet), Ellen Barkin (This Boy's Life) & Benicio Del Toro (The Usual Suspects) were good, but underused.
In conclusion, The Fan is a sinister & suspensful film with many uncomfortable moments in it. It's watchable, the actors do the best they can with it, but isnt the blockbuster people expected it to be at the time, which i think is evident come the end. Reccomended.
