I really only look at Enid Blyton's books as being part of my childhood, and therefore read them again with nostalgia. Also with amazement at the world she created, where everybody had maids and cooks and lived in big houses. The astonishment when people of lower classes, such as circus boys and gardeners turned out to be good people! The stories for today's tastes are very simplistic. It is always easy to spot the 'baddie' in the first few pages, because of the 'cruel mouth and evil eyes'.And the plots are so simple, with all the secret passages, treasure, dungeons etc.But still,it reminds me of childhood, when a new Enid Blyton in the library was a day to celebrate.

I enjoyed these age 6/7 and when I reread I found I did as well, although it is so much more sexist than I can recollect (which is unpleasant, but interesting coming from characters who are age 11 and younger!) the characters do not act their ages - Julian ought to be 15 from his behaviour, Dick and George 11 and Anne 6!

Enid Blyton knows how to tell a good tale. The Famous Five can't follow directions and it rains. Not only that but there is a jail break. It all happens sheltering in the barn.

Our 7yr old boys cannot get enough of the Famous Five stories, just like me at their age. We're reading these to them just now and hopefully they'll then read them themselves before too long.

I bought this book for my daughter as I loved it when I was a child. I am happy to say it is just as I remember it and she loves it as much as I did!
