I like author TJP and the Charlie Hand series--til this one. But honestly, "The Famous and the Dead" takes a bigger leap into fantasy than I could swallow. I suppose that Parker was already too far down the devils and angels road to turn back in this finale for multiple story lines started in previous books, but actually the action crime element of the book would have held together fine without the fantasy (my opinion). Despite the distractions, there are some good characters here, including protagonist Charlie Hood and gun and drug smuggling elements are well done.

Author Parker has some fine stories to tell, and doesn't need the sci/fi approach to bring them home.

Format: Paperback
Rightly described as the Hemingway of Crime, T Jefferson Parker continues to write up a storm. Characters, main and peripheral, are all real and well rounded. Plots are natural and event driven. The wicked villain could hardly be more villainous. The end; well, the end has to be read and digested. A more balanced torment for both Hood and Finnegan could not be imagined. The Famous and the Dead stands sufficiently alone to be read out of sequence or completely on its own. As an introduction to the long list of T Jefferson Parker's crime novels it more than pays the price of the ticket. Let's have more of this fine author from Southern California.
