Inside there is a fold out map, which is a nice addition although largely useless due to the fact that the maps are inside the book itself.
Also with the hardback edition I received 7 A4 sized lithographs. Shiny/fuzzy pieces of card, each with an enlarged picture of each of the S.P.E.C.I.A.L stats. Strength, perception, endurance etc. Very nice.
The substance of the book is made up of detailed descriptions and diagrams of most of the buildings and places within the wasteland. Each place has a map, a list of items found at each place, as-well as a list of the types of enemies.
It also features an almost complete list of quests, along with complete walkthrus for each one.
There are also some pages that give info on crafting. Materials, what they break down into, and how to build some guns. This aspect though is pretty vague and base. The real content of the book is based on the places and items.
This book is ideally suited for people who, when starting a mission, want to make sure they collect everything along the way. Bobbleheads, magazines, unique (legendary) gear etc. In the index, you can look up the name of the place you're going to, then flip to the right page and het presto. It'll tell you everything you need to know.
The book doesn't cover every single mission or location however. All info relevant to the story is in there, but there are plenty of places in fallout that are not in the book. I believe this is by design. You are supposed to go exploring, it's what fallout is all about.
In conclusion, I wouldn't call this book essential. But it can certainly be handy. Especially if you've just started the game and are finding yourself to be somewhat overwhelmed.
The cons; The pages off this guide are EXTREMELY thin, if you've got pets or young children who may get their hands on this book it will be ripped to shreds in no time. The main con I have with this guide is how vague and little in-depth it is on the quests, I know other reviews have said that's due to Fallout 4 being a game in which the experience differs from player to player but considering how well past Bethesda guides have been including the outstanding Skyrim and Fallout 3 guide, this is just poor shoddy work, brought out to maximize sales without putting in all the necessary hard-work that goes with a decent guide. If anyone is indeed reading this review before considering buying I would recommend just finding a decent online guide on gamefaqs or other knows websites such as IGN. The only reason anyone should buy this is for true Fallout collectors who would like it on their shelf.
This is and brilliant survival guide for fallout 4. I was finding myself lugging this guide around with me when I was out and about so I could read about more while I didn't have the chance to be playing.
Throughout this guide, various aspects of the game are covered such as monster/enemy types, certain areas and weapon information. There are plenty of walkthroughs to help guide you through the game including maps of each area and items you can wander across during your time in the commonwealth. If you are determined to gather all collectables in every area then this would be the guide to turn to, however not EVERY area is covered, this would defeat the purpose of the game where exploring is a major part.
Overall this guide is great for both beginners and game fanatics who love to collect merchandise!
As well as the guide book, you receive some nice mini pictures (lithographs) which annotate the S.P.E.C.I.A.L attributes used in the game.
Also included is a giant map of the Commonwealth and which includes a more detailed section overleaf of the Boston neighbourhoods as they are more condensed areas. This is only included in the Limited Edition Hardcover edition. I honestly think its worth the extra £5-7 with the added material which is the decision I took when purchasing this. You also have the opportunity to download a Free E-Guide from Prima Games (Check if available on Paperback version, it is on hardback) to view on your smartphone or tablet while playing the game. This was provided with mine inside the Hardback Copy.
The book is detailed on explaining basics and essentially providing tips on how to use items/people/weapons for your own use during the game. Its does not provide specific quest details but enough to support you and crucially make your own decisions. Fallout 4 is free-roam & free for all. The game will always be different for each player depending on the choices you make. Therefore the guide provides main items of interest such as ammo, health and magazines to build your dweller's wisdom and "perks". It provides maps of the general area noting what to find when you adventure the Commonwealth. Be warned, Vault-Tec cannot provide 100% accuracy as things can differ depending on your previous actions. You may get blown up by a frag mine or Bottlecap mine at any given place!!
However, this is ideal for anyone playing Fallout 4 who need to know where the must have items are (there are plenty). This game will take ages to complete with the guide, even more without it.
So grab your Vault-Tec Guide today, before you leave and explore the Commonwealth. Be warned, Deathclaws and Super Mutants do not hesitate!!
P.S Book also carries the same humour as the game and makes it more fun to read.
