Online Aspect:
Cons: I have great internet for gaming and yet tonight in 30 minutes of gameplay I was disconnected from the server twice, and if that wasn't bad enough, I was consistently thrown back to an area of the game I had cleared of super mutants only to have them respawn again as I was dumped on a different server.
It always seems to take ages to load on start-up, which is a little deflating when you don't have much time to play.
Communication options between online players could be better - I don't have a microphone so have to exclusively use emojis to try and say what I want to.
Pros: I did play with another player to finish an event, which was a nice change as it made it significantly easier.
Storyline and Gameplay:
Pros: The main quests are definitely engaging, and follow the themes of previous fallout games.
The graphics are stunning.
There is a huge map to explore.
I actually enjoy that it's harder to find caps/good weapons etc. and I think it's an interesting twist that you have to maintain your characters hunger/thirst although I think it could run down a little bit slower as I'm sure my character is always thirsty!
Power armour seems to work a lot more smoothly in Fallout 76 than in Fallout 4, I hated how clunky it was in Fallout 4 so this was a nice surprise.
I like that the perks are randomised. For me, I have always ended up selecting the exact same perks at the beginning of the game whereas this way I have been forced out of my comfort zone and thinking more carefully about which perks to have.
There seems to be a lot stronger emphasis on scrapping items to upgrade and maintain armour and weapons than in Fallout 4, as everything seems a little bit more scarce it's important to keep any good weapons you find in good working condition. I really like this aspect of gameplay as it's not about constantly dropping and picking up new weapons.
Cons: I haven't come across as many side-quests as I have in previous fallout instalments. For me, I enjoyed exploring the world and coming across the smaller side quests, which don't seem to be as frequent in Fallout 76, although the ones I have come across have been enjoyable.
The lack of NPCs for me make the game a little bit less engaging, most of the communication with the 'survivors' comes in the form of holotapes, but not meeting any NPCs makes these storylines fall a little flat quickly.
There are probably going to be more pros and cons that I come across the more I play the game. I really want to love this game, and I'm hoping that in the coming months Bethesda iron out some of the problems that I've mentioned about servers randomly dropping and improving the communication options. I still think the game has a lot of potential and I will continue to play it to see how it develops!
For me, I think the option to play offline would have solved the majority of the issues I have experienced and wouldn't have detracted from the gameplay at all. I don't really participate in the events and I don't play online - I think if you had the option either way it would improve the gameplay for both the players that want to play online and those who prefer to play solo offline.
I got this day one and after day one that was the end of me playing this game, hearing years down the line they had sorted issue out I decided to test the waters again.
There are issue that have been resolved, such as adding NPCs and all. But there are what I would say more issues than fun, once you exit the vault you are landed into the waste land, running across players at level 100-200, doing PvP in this game is just something that is not there, you both have to 'agree' to fight which kinda takes away like the horrors of running into other players or being cautious.
There's also a subscription service for this game, because... Well just because, i feel the game requires you to stick with it.
Now while I've spoken so badly of this game I feel there are it's upsides, it does have an amazing sound track to wonder around with and just grind the XP, there is a feeling where I do have to tell myself it is a fallout game.
Overall it's a middle of the road kinda game, I want to like it and with a somewhat battle pass feature it can keep people playing it that's for sure, but there's something I can't pin point about this game, I feel I play it not enjoying it, but rather trying to enjoy it.
Fallout 76...well isn't any of that. I was very excited to get my hands on this thinking I would be in for another top notch experience even with it being an online player rather than single player. Lets start with the graphics which haven't changed since the last release. The scenery takes time to come into focus, the finer details aren't there and certainly looks very worn and tired. The world you play in is vast and quite frankly sparse. I enjoyed seeing the Fallout world with less destruction but it's so big that getting from A to B is exhausting. Fast travel you now have to pay for with caps, enemies respawn everytime the game reloads meaning areas become extremely reptititive and you lack that motivation to keep exploring because nothing interesting or challenging comes up.
As far as gameplay goes it doesn't. It goes backwards. VATS is now in real time meaning limited time to aim and even then it has become more of a steady to fire tool rather than an actual targeting system. Pipboy actions are also now in real time meaning no pause to swap out weapons or choose your choice to heal during combat meaning you have to fight with what you have as you can't fight and re-equip without dying. Camp building is another retrograde step as you have to carry all materials with you meaning in a very short amount of time you have no room left. Even with perk cards which you cannot choose as they are given out at random on level up fail to make this trait any better. Essentially the camp has no other purpose other than to be yours. Work benches can be found across the map as can beds which means the camp rather than being a place to protect all your gear and serve as a base from which to come and go has become a convienance rather than a necessitity.
Playing with other players is also fraught. No communication other than on screen prompts to join a team or trade and given that you meet people playing at various stages of the story pointless. Who wants to re-do what they've done just because someone else hasn't. Having no one to interact with in the form of characters immediately removes one of the winning traits of the previous games and leaves this one feeling flat.
Speaking of characters and story lines, that's right there is none. Listening to holotapes for quests and moving up the so called plot line is all well and good but doesn't make me emotionally invested in the game or for what I am supposed to be doing. The lack of characters to talk to, learn about and follow means the story lacks any depth and your actions have no effect on the world. How can they when others have to follow the story behind you.
Overall the game is a mess. Effectively Bethesda have produced a game with no real story, characters and poor interaction with fellow players which was supposed to be the point of this game. Maybe with many more updates the game may come good. But from my experience, being thrown off the server twice, two very long and data hungry updates, multiple enemy, scenery and own player glitches means I very much doubt that happening.
So really in conclusion don't buy this game, it is a real disappointment and for Bethesda one game to far on a old and outdated game engine.
