Product description

Review

'Made me want to run away to a Greek island.'

(Helena Frith Powell)

'This book will make you laugh and cry and laugh again. I didn't want it to end…'

(Emma Woolf)

'Captures the gentle pace of island life with great charm. A joy to read.'

(Harry Bucknall)

'Unlucky in love? If you can't escape to an idyllic Greek island Falling in Honey is the next best thing.'

(John Mole)

'What makes Falling in Honey so gripping is the clear adoration that Jennifer feels for the country she now calls home. Through exquisite descriptions and very honest revelations soon she's not the only one falling head over heels. One way ticket to Greece anyone?'

(Wanderlust)

'Jennifer never expected to find love when she followed her dream... love was the last thing she was looking for... Her remarkable story, about which she has written a moving book, has more than an echo of Shirley Valentine about it.'

(The Daily Express)

'beautifully conveys Jennifer's gentle integration into island life with her obvious delight at finding joy in simple pleasures.'

(Lady Hiker in Cyprus)

'It's genuinely the kind of book anyone interested in Greece would enjoy.'

(EuGREEKA Newsletter)

'Your story is an inspiration. You take us through the extreme ups and downs of your life to help us understand how love and a relationship can be with a place, not necessarily a person.'

(leavingcairo.com Blog)

'So, pack the guidebook AND pack these excellent memoirs of settling on Tilos, which brings this tiny island off Rhodes to incredible life… So much information oozes out of the book… Jennifer is like a breath of fresh air with her belief that it is possible to 'take action to make life better' … The book is a total delight… Greece literally jumps off the pages and introduces you to the island in a more intimate way than perhaps a guidebook can.'

(Tripfiction.com)

'enchanting and life affirming'

(Spirit FM Book Club)

'This inspiring true story made us laugh and cry.' [Awarded five out of five stars]

(Heat)

'Barclay's beautiful memoir recalls both Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love (2006) and the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, providing glimpses into the lives of people in a small Greek village and the process of healing from a broken heart.'

(Booklist)

I really loved it and was sad when I finished it. A real pleasure

(Jane Johnson, author of The Tenth Gift and The Sultan's Wife)

'it’s wholly brilliant'

(Heatworld (Heat Magazine website))

I loved this book. If you are battling with British summer weather here is your fix of sunshine, well during the Greek summer time, during Jennifer's winter time on Tilos you might feel cosiest cocooned in your British central heating. Jennifer's understanding of nature, weather, light, humanity is descriptive writing at its best. What on the face of it is just one ex-patriot's experience of life on a tiny remote Greek island colourful characters certainly add to the narrative and one in particular adding an extraordinary twist to the 'plot'.

As a lover of Greece I was really looking forward to reading this book. It started weakly but did manage to battle my way through in the hope it got better, sadly it limped along in much the same vein. This book reads like a blog, "I did this, he said that,I walked there, I wore this, I ate that, I went for (yet another) swim and dried off on the beach (again)!" Some nice descriptions but it is so awfully repetitive and not written with engaging narrative. I applaud Miss Barclay for escaping the 9-5 and admit to wishing I could do the same, but I wish I had saved my five pounds and spent it, and the reading time, elsewhere.

I don't write reviews often but I felt compelled to stop someone else buying this book. My favourite book is The Island by Victoria Hislop and although I knew it wouldn't match that, I thought a book about living on a Greek island would appeal to me... No way! This book is so self-centred, mostly about men with a few island bits thrown in. What annoys me overall is it so disjointed with many errors throughout, so much so I was so annoyed I could not finish it! I don't believe the earlier reviews of it being 'a great book'. I wonder how it was published!

...food and the desire to plunge into the sea and to share...(we can all dream), the tranquil idyllic island that is Tilos.

So wonderful is the spell that Jennifer weaves, speaking clearly with a great love in her heart...I became entranced amongst the pages of this book at every spare moment...and a lot of moments that really weren't that spare at all!

I don't like honey and am sure I'd swim in the opposite direction if I came face to face with an octopus but I found myself smiling, at times gasping, with Jennifer's candid prose as the story unfolds.

This is a story of hope and a love story with many dimensions...of life, of a place, of a culture, of a people and...of a person.

Amongst the pages I can almost taste the feta...I'm 100% more fluent in Greek than I was before I opened the book...My knowledge of the Greek islands is expanded and I feel I know the Rhodes to Tilos ferry timetable...

This isn't some kind of travel guide - this is a story written from the heart...a modern day Shirley Valentine? Perhaps...a story of discovery and exploration of self and one of finding happiness and joy in a simple life that most of us fail to slow down and partake of these days.

A lesson to us all?

Oh dear.... I guess if you want a trivial time-filler while you're lying on your sun-lounger, you could read this... The 3 books will probably get made into an TV series.... Please don't waste your time & money...
If you want a Greek Island book, get "The Greek for Love: Live, Life & Loss in Corfu" by James Chatto. Absolutely beautifully-written !
