So I was browsing the Crime section and I was really drawn in by the cover and title of this one. The plot follows Meredith, who is in a knock-off Subway when a man comes in with a gun. She finds herself in a hostage situation with her worst enemy, Lisa Bellows. The gunman orders Lisa to come with him, leaving Meredith behind and severely emotionally traumatised. She begins hallucinating and fantasising about what could have become of Lisa. Her average life has been shattered by what happened to her and nobody in her family knows how to reach her.
Overall I enjoyed this - the author has a good way of getting into Meredith's head and setting up a strange, dream-like ambience throughout the narrative and even follows an alternative scenario where the gunman takes both girls instead of Lisa. I even found Lisa to be an interesting character as the author exposes what kind of person she was beneath her alpha-girl persona and her difficult homelife with caring for her emotionally fragile mother. However, I despised Claire. Whining, entitled and prone to having dramatic histrionics whenever her perfect life was threatened, I wanted to slap her across the face. Her daughter and son both go through terrible trauma and all she can do is monologue about how difficult it is for her. It also bothered me a lot that the book ended so inconclusively - it could have been made much better if it was longer and the ending felt more like a proper ending, but the plot kind of grinds to a halt and tails off.
