5.0 out of 5 stars Vermeer. A believable portrait 8 July 2008
By A. A. Burrows - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
To start with, this is a good read, a very good read. It has strong characters drawn realistically, not overstated. Our hero, the great Dutch painter, Joannis Vermeer, is an historical figure about whom next to nothing is know outside of the few paintings we have. So this is a work of both history and fiction, and our Vermeer is allowed to be an everyday sort of hero, a simple but driven young man whose unique vision leads him to stand alone against the art and artists of his time. This is a romance but one told with tension and sensitivity. It's a love story for anyone who relishes falling in love. It's an adventure story with dramatic turns, but one told subtly, with grace, with the kind of restraint that engages the imagination, the reader's own creativity.

Mr. Eaton, like his hero Vermeer, creates a world of beauty, wonder, and humanity by paying meticulous attention to the details. If you have been caught by any one of Vermeer's paintings and felt that you have been in his studio or on his street looking over his shoulder, this book will be your time machine, sweeping you back into his world. It's a strange world, an exotic world, but it becomes very deeply real.

Beyond the dramatic story, beneath the irresistible picture of Vermeer's Delft, Mr. Eaton provokes long thoughts on the artistic process and the role of faith (all kinds of faith) in all great human endeavors. If you are looking for a book you can and will enjoy on many levels, give this one a read. It is a long book, but I was enthralled throughout and very sorry to have it end.
