Since the playset is meant to encourage youngsters to garden and grow their own plants, it came with a pack of pea plant seeds. These need soaking a day on water then planting in some earth or compost which has been placed in the fairy garden. The major issues with this are twofold. The garden is not very deep so won't be able to grow much with such a shallow depth, but more importantly, there is no provision in the garden tray for drainage, which means it is going to be prone to waterlogging. If we bear in mind this is for children this doesn't seem like a very good idea. There needed to be a small tray in the bottom with holes in it or holes in the garden tray and a rectangular 'saucer" element added to itso excess water is caught.
I also think it could have been more imaginative inasmuch as the cottage has a roof which a chimney is fitted into. Why didn't they make the roof have a little dormer window she could have sat on for example, or made it so the roof was just a trim with a bigger hole in middle in which some peas could be down and grown? I think this would have looked magical.
I give it an ok rating as the peas germinate fine and it can be used as instructed bit as more room for improvement leave it as 3 stars.
The box arrives containing the following:
Picket Fence & Gate
A fairy house with removable roof for easy access
Pea shoot seeds

The windowsill planter is pretty small and not particularly deep meaning that it is not overly versatile. It will be ok for the pea shoot seeds supplied but if you would like to plant more than this you will be severely limited due to the soil depth. Also as other have noted there are no drainage holes which means you will need to be be very careful with watering. This seems a bit silly as the product is targeted at smaller kids which will be probe to tipping all the water they can on the soil but I guess this have been balanced about the problems parents might face if water could escape through the bottom! The lack of drainage holes mean that parents don't have to worry about unexpected leaks on furniture.
The peas themselves are easy to grow and shoots appear pretty quickly meaning that kids do not have to wait long to see the results of planting the seeds. Once planted your child can then play with the fairy and her little house while waiting for her 'garden' to sprout.
Overall this is a lovely idea which provides an educational and interesting experience for a child. It could do with a bit more thought around the practical gardening element to give it a longer life span. The set is also reasonably priced for what you get so if your child really enjoys it you can look at others in the series without having to worry about investing too much cash.
Arrived in a book sized box
There was a plastic Kitchen Garden.
What ever we try to do the fairy doesn’t stand up on own and no place to sit. So in the end pushed feet into the compost.
The plastic container doesn’t have any water drain holes.
So once pea seeds planted and watered now where for the water to drain out. So well compost could become over wet.
A drain cover, holes would help.
Seeds are fun to plant and grow really fast.
Used with 7 and 8 year old girls who really enjoyed their play and learning
So a good 3 stars.
The house is a bit wasteful on the amount of space that the garden has for planting the seeds. A better idea would be a 'terrace'' that could hold the house and overlook the garden so that all the space can be used for planting and perhaps the inclusion of a small hoe or rake to make the gardening more realistic. The set is reasonably priced at under £12 but could have included a small bag of compost to make it an instant gift. My grandchildren love this little garden and examine it each day to see if the peas are growing. In my opinion a lovely educational and useful 'toy'.
