This book steers perilously close to whimsy. It concerns five fairy houses-obviously in miniature-presented in the form of a field diary by a fictional botanist. Or rather, field letters, as these writings have a specific recipient, the botanist's granddaughter.
What really stands out is the attention to detail. As well as the houses themselves, there are all sorts of house artefacts lovingly made from plant materials and then illustrated. My current favourite is the beach house.
I can recommend this book for all appreciators of crafts/gardens/things faery. It isn't just for children. A word of warning, though : there are no actual fairies. In fact, I prefer this: my imagination can supply them.
