I first heard of Future Loop Foundation through the The Just Music Café album (highly recommended in itself - downtempo bliss). Shame on me - he's been around for years!

The Fading Room consists of two albums - the Memories, released individually as an album a couple of years ago, and the Remixes. It's jolly good of them to release the original album again along with the remixes.... they're quite different.

All are based around audio interviews dug out of the loft, of various family members being interviewed by a youngster in the early 70's about hobbies, hopes, dreams and memories. Sound odd? It's not, and if you're a fan of downtempo stuff, you're more than used to hearing samples such as these interwoven into music; you'll barely notice. They make for an interesting and nostalgic insight into a bygone era. The music underpinning them is pretty gentle stuff - electronica and acoustic stories to match those of the narrator. It's quality, thoughtful stuff (as is everything on the Just Music label, it seems). The middle of the album stands out for me, with a gently strummed Everything as is should be raising the temperature (and sounding not unlike Boards of Canada) through Homegrown Dynamic, before segueing gently into the dreamy steel guitars of Inbetween somewhere beautiful. Magic.

But as solid a performance as the original album offers, even this pales next to the remixes, which are something else. They've been lovingly reworked without losing any of their charm and there's barely a duff one in amongst them (except maybe the Go! Team remix of This is where we live). Sunshine Philosophy you may have heard before on the Just Music Café album, or the EP (surely an advert or two?) - it's possibly the ultimate feel good song of the century!

The Fading Room: Memories & Remixes is a re-release of the `Memories from a Fading Room' album but packaged with an additional CD of remixes of 8 of the tracks. Together the 2 CDs equate to about 90 minutes of music and represent fantastic value.

Initially I was a little sceptical about the need for the remixes but they add another dimension to the piece and make a great ambient album even better.

The idea of overlaying recorded interviews with a soundtrack is hardly an original idea, but to my knowledge is has never been done as well as here.

`Homegrown dynamic', `Experimentation begins at home' and `Sunshine Philosophy' are smart, well thought out pieces. Fans of Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Sweet Billy Pilgrim, David Sylvian or Jon Hopkins should investigate immediately.

Oh and being a `Just Music' release it is of course beautifully packaged as well.
