This is book is really pretty funny, unlike my silly review. It sits on my coffee table permanently, so that all my friends can know how interested I am in shark facts in numbers up to 100.
The book delights in such nonsense as Mexicans not believing in pandas (if you are reading this in Mexico City or Chihuahua I hate to break the news to you: pandas are real!), pandas being magnetic due to the amount of iron in their livers and that the collective noun for a group of pandas is a "cupboard"! Many of the "facts" about pandas link together in ways which are frankly silly and deeply amusing.
This book cracked up my book loving 7 year old and made me laugh as well.
I have recently learnt that it is impossible to lie when looking into the eyes of a panda. As I am staring into the dark pools of a panda's eyes as I type, you know all I have said about this book is true!
This book would make a great gift for anybody with a sense of humour that leans towards the ridiculous!
Delightful, funny, silly and highly recommended.
This book is the follow up (companion?) to 100 Facts about Pandas and shares the same basic approach. Double page spread with an illustration on one side and the "fact' on the other. Some of the `facts' flirt with plausibility - but not many, and some are so outrageously silly that they could even be true!
However, while 100 Facts about Pandas was consistently funny, the Sharky version is only intermittently so. There are some gems here: sharks reactions to cola and kittens, the link between sharks and pandas and the collective nouns for hammerhead and great whites are standouts. Many of the rest are amusing, but not laugh out loud funny.
I suppose my reaction to this book could have been tempered by my reaction to the 100 Facts about Pandas book. That was consistently funny - often to the point of near collapse - but the shark version just does not cut the mustard.
Is it a one joke format extended to two jokes? Is the material just not as good? Was I setting too high a standard? I don't really know.
My advice - if you don't own either book, get the panda book. If you already own the pandas, you may find this one a little more low key.
Recommended, but only just!

Bought this book basically because I resemble a panda. Thought it might be amusing, but the level of silliness is sublime. Read morePublished on 9 Mar. 2015 by CaptainSolvite
