Format: Hardcover
This book contains 150 fabric manipulation techniques split into the 3 following categories: pleat and fold, stitch & gather and apply & layer. Some of the many techniques covered include box pleating, shirring, American smocking, English smocking, Suffolk puffs, trapunto, 3d appliqué and quilting.

As with most books this book commences with details of the different fabrics, tools and supplies used in the book. It also covers some of the basic techniques and stitches used. Then it goes into the fabric manipulation techniques themselves.

Each of the techniques is accompanies by beautiful hand drawn diagrams and stunning photos illustrating every step. Plus of course written instructions, but the focus is very much on the visual. Different variations and techniques are shown, as well as a few projects scattered throughout the book.

I like that at the front of the book Ruth has added tips on how to use this book to create your own style, how to take her ideas further and make them unique to you. I think this beautiful book would encourage any reader to start experiment with different fabric manipulation techniques.

Whoever gave this book 4 or 5 stars, did not try the instructions. I wanted to make the embellishment featuring on the front page (which is why I bought the book), but after several evenings lost in trying, did not manage without the help of a Japanese origami expert friend. I tried contacting the author for more info, but to no avail. Furthermore, the examples in most of the pictures are rather clumsy, if I was to finish projects like that, I would not be satisfied, let alone publish it. Rather a disappointment, the author has some good ideas, but is not quite getting there.

I was hoping to find something that blew my mind but found a basic craft book. I bought this as well as The Art of Manipulating Fabric and found that much more to my liking. I will explore the ideas more so i can get my moneys worth. If your into making pretty pattern to make something look lovely this is the book. If you're looking for a book to create stunning art this may not be what you are looking for. Do judge this book by its cover.

After using The Art of Manipulating Fabric I was unsure if I would need this book as well. I gave it a go and am glad I did - the explanations of the techniques are clear and well illustrated. I am a visual learner and the instructions here were clearer to me than in other books. I saw techniques that I had not seen else where. If you are interested in textiles techniques this us a very useful book.

I bought this this book for myself as I was looking for some ideas on different fabric manipulation techniques for dress making. The book is an impressive size with a lot of information. The photos were really detailed and explanations were detailed in the sense that they were easy to understand and were broken down into individual steps. Honestly, I felt this book was better suited to someone who has done little to no manipulation - much of the book focuses around ribbon manipulation like is shown on the cover, or pleating. I was hoping for more of the manipulation techniques that build complex structure. I was suggested to The Art Of Fabric Manipulation as a book better suited to what I was looking for. This book will be useful for ideas for different pleats and the ribbon folding, but I do not think I will personally reference it a lot. If you have done little to no manipulation in the form of pleats etc the book would be ideal for you. I have rated it 4 stars as it is very detailed and is a good book, but just wasn't quite as detailed as I was hoping.

I have been looking for a book like this for embellishing all sorts of projects, from cushions to clothes, and this was just what I was looking for and well worth the money. Lots of ideas, many of them quite simple, but I'd never have thought of them. Very effective ideas, not just the usual applique, etc, etc. Great value.

I am chuffed to bits that I bought this book for my sister-in-law at Christmas. She has been developing her sewing skills for a few years now, and is thrilled to have this clear, concise and effective explanation of decorative skills. Recommend to anyone who is looking to go that little bit further when sewing.
