I bought this book without having read a sample, when I got around to reading it I saw the book had received mixed reviews but decided to give it a go. Unfortunately I really didn't enjoy it, largely due to the supporting characters all being so spiteful and mean-spirited. The general plot idea wasn't bad, even if quite far fetched, a couple reuniting after years apart with unanswered questions and raw feelings between them. Clara isn't as horrid as her family but when I thought she might set herself apart from them even further perhaps by offering to help Boone without making him stay with her during her sister's wedding she didn't. I didn't feel their chemistry during the book or what pulled them together. Also it was frustrating how they kept delaying talking about what had happened between them, surely if you had the opportunity to have closure and ask questions you'd do it fairly quickly. Overall, I found the book was rather bleak even when the author tried to lighten things up towards the end.

I didn't get past 40% due to the story line being so utterly ridiculous and the characters having no depth whatsoever.
SLIGHT SPOILERS
The story starts with the main female in a taxi on her way to her childhood/parents' home, having been away for several years. She's nervous so stops off at a bar for some Dutch courage and happens to meet up with the main male, who it would appear is the reason she left town all those years ago.
She's going home for her younger sister's wedding, which is to another ex of hers...they were shagging behind her back apparently and are now getting married.
So that she doesn't have to attend the wedding and go back to her parents and family with nobody in tow, she pays the ex that she met in the bar 5 minutes after arriving back in town $10,000 to pretend to be her "Plus One" for the week...and he agrees! This is despite the fact that there's some mysterious big reveal reason as to why they split up before she left all those years ago and the fact that her whole family think he's scum and not good enough. Of course she couldn't just say she hasn't got a boyfriend, because no female is of any worth unless they have a partner! ...and of course it's better to turn up with somebody your whole family hates and that you have to pay, rather than turn up on your own! This is meant to be a "second chance love" story but the way she constantly objectifies him and her whole family treat him like crap, which she allows just makes me want to tell him to run away very quickly, not see them get back together. Her mother and sisters are hateful human beings and it appears she didn't fall far from the tree, as well as being totally spineless.

There is this fragile feel to this book. Boone and Clara have their issues, their anger to hold onto but when they have to face their past together, they find a way to let the past go and grasp a future that they never thought would be possible. For a second chance romance, I'm deeply in love with this one.
