As someone who loves history, this was a book I greatly enjoyed. Its about a family from Eastern Europe and what they went through during the second world war. I think its based on a true story, it certainly seemed that way, and I found myself totally caught up in it, in the different family member's lives, and unable to leave it down.
I carried the book around in my head for days. This is one I can easily recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book should be read over and over again By: Gideon Langholz 17 Oct. 2014

This is a compelling and captivating story in every way. In the first place, as mentioned elsewhere, it is a true story about courage, endurance, death and survival in Europe during the darkest periods of the first half of the 20th Century. Secondly, the author is fulfilling what her grandfather, Moses Ecker, saw as his duty to “let the world know of the atrocities” – the brutal annihilation of the Jews in the Ukraine and all over Europe. Through the story of the Ecker family, Moses’ granddaughter, the author of this amazing, powerful, and breathtaking book, is telling us that it might happen yet again unless we neither forget nor forgive. Thirdly, this book is much more than the family Ecker story; it also provides an in-depth political and social portrait of Eastern Europe in first half of the 20th Century, a portrayal done not in the form of a dry academic treatise, but in the fashion of the best of novels, where all of the characters come to life. Finally, the Prologue sets the readers on the trail of an intriguing detective story: did Moses Ecker – “that brave man of indomitable spirit, who lies in an unknown and unmarked grave,” – commit suicide or was he murdered by those who sheltered him for nine months? This is an important book that everyone should read.

This is a well-written and compelling true story of a Jewish family's trials and tragedies during WW2. It is powerful and disturbing and an important addition to the testament of suffering of millions under the Nazis, the Russians and the Ukrainians. I recommend the book with enthusiasm.

This book moved me. It made me laugh and it made me cry. It is a beautiful and sad true story about the quest for survival, and the two sides of human nature - good and bad. It is like no other book about the holocaust, and I would recommend it to everyone.
