How I missed the good old days playing this game, is good to bring back nostalgia sometimes.For the time it was launched had great graphics, and still has, and was very imersive, 20 minutes or more driving on narrow paths of the rally tracks, a wrong blink and you're out.
Totaly advise this game for all racing games fans, love this game.

an incredible game back when it was released but is more than showing its age compared to the likes of colin mcrae dirt 2 and other newer titles.

Best rally game outside Richard Burns Rally

This is one of the best rally games I've ever played - and I've played most of them - most of the major ones anyway. I've found it very difficult to find a truly satisfying rally game, and this really is a diamond in the rough. It isn't perfect, Richard Burns Rally is hands down the best rally game ever, but it should be as it is much newer. There are a few areas in which this game trumps it, however, and it certainly beats the crap out of most other rally games I've played.

This is the fourth game in a series of games that I only realised were a series of games by the same developer recently. The first one I've never played and hails from the SEGA Rally era, and was apparently the first serious rally game for the PC. The second one they made I can vouch for as good game (both the first two are just called Rally Championship) as I played it when I was younger and despite suffering from not being able to render anything beyond the track (hence the annoying "invisible wall" effect) was actually really quite good, and included a seriously lengthy and detailed simulation of the RAC rally of Great Britain. The third game (International Rally Championship) was a bit of a bish-up, as they focussed on adding a huge variety of landscape and (totally invented) tracks, and forgot to actually make a decent handling model, resulting in a driving experience more like sonic racing heroes than anything else, and then put about 30 stages in every manner of location together into one long rally which was boring. It did have a decent crazy rallycross mode though, though it was more like a group multiplay of mario-kart while drunk than an actual racing game. However these games were well ahead of the curve at the time. The point I'm making here is that these guys had it in them to do a really great game, the computing power just hadn't caught up with them yet. Then it did - and they delivered.

Firstly - this game uses real stages from real rallies in the British Rally Championship. Far from all of them I think, but a decent amount - and these stages actually have LENGTH. Better than the 3-minute dashes you get in most rally games - some of these stages are 20 minutes long and require real concentration. The handling model is really good and very realistic, though the lack of good force effects (not common at the time) means it sometimes feels a little floaty and distant, which sometimes makes things a little harder than they should be. There's little in the way of visible damage like cracked glass and bent panels, and no real banging and crashing sound effects, so the game feels like it doesn't have a realistic damage model when you're driving it, because you can't really tell what damage is occurring. Believe me, it DOES have a realistic damage model - better than that on any other game I've played besides Richard Burns Rally - and the length of the stages and limited repair times mean you really have to be careful, because even minor damage can add minutes to your rally time, and affect your placement. Which brings me on to the AI. AI on rally games is not really AI, just opposition timings, so should be relatively easy for a game developer to get right, you would think? Unfortunately not in the majority of games. Most rally games I've played suffer either from being crushingly easy to the point of boredom (Colin McRae DIRT's rally mode for example) or by having such a limited opposition that a tiny mistake puts you last. Or both. Here they've actually gone for a DECENT NUMBER OF OPPONENTS with DECENT TIMES and a LARGE RANGE OF ABILITIES so your positioning actually MEANS SOMETHING rather than just being a "win if you don't make a screw-up, lose if you do" as many rally games are. In the 2WD championship you fight it out in a 90-strong field, and I presume adding the 4WD cars makes it much bigger. The good drivers are, well, really good, meaning you have to drive very well and not make mistakes to win, but there's a large spread down the field, which means that, like in reality, one major screw-up that costs you a few minutes will put you out of contention for the win, but still leave you fighting for positions further down, rather than dead-set last as would be the case on most rally games. Combine this good opponent system, good damage modelling, realistic car handling and long stages drawn straight from the BRC, and you get a really, really good game that does something no other rally game does, it tests your endurance and consistency more than anything else, and still requires out-and-out speed to win.

There is just one problem with this game - the games these guys made afterwards. The 5th and 6th games in this series are Rally Championship Xtreme and Richard Burns Rally. And there lies the problem - Richard Burns rally is even better. It's got even better handling model, is much more fun to play, and is even more of a hardcore rally sim. RCX is much more toned down, with shorter stages and easier (though more enjoyable) driving, weak opposition, and a more forgiving damage model - and is a really good place for someone new to rally games to start. But that doesn't mean this game has been made obsolete from RBR. It's a very different experience altogether, and a totally different challenge. The stages are also better and the championship more challenging in terms of driver vs the world, not necessarily vs other drivers.

If you're new to rally games, get Rally Championship Xtreme or CMR 2.0 (more variety and opposition challenge but less realistic driving) - you won't handle Mobil 1 as a newbie - it will frustrate you to tears.
If you're an experienced racing/rally sim driver looking for the best and most realistic rally game out there to challenge you to the max - get RBR - in the end it's an all-round better package than this one.
BUT
If, like me, you've played a lot of rally games, and you've already got RBR and want a different challenge altogether, one that pits you mentally and physically against the stages and tests your endurance and rally-long planning and strategy, even if it isn't as white-knuckle crazy and hardcore sim-handling as RBR, then this one is for you - and it couldn't have been done better.
