Construction / Build Quality - Excellent. I've never been let down by a fenix torch despite regular and intensive use. Some of the smaller single cell Fenix models do not appear to be as well made. The PD35, however, has thick walls, and feels solid and well engineered. There is a youtube review which shows the buttons being pressed while the torch is submerged in running water - a reassuring thought on a wet night shift!!!
Design - Levels are well spaced. The eco mode (10 lumens I think) is great for most tasks at night, such as map reading without dazzling myself or my colleagues. The battery lasts for days on this mode : ) In complete darkness, very little light is actually needed, therefore the eco mode is the one which I most frequently use. The torch can be "locked out" to prevent accidental activation by unscrewing the tailcap 1/4 of a turn. The pocket clip is strong and can be aligned to point at the mode switch, making the switch easier to find in the dark.
Beam - The best feature of this light is the beam. Compared to most other 2 x CR123 flashlights, it is lightly wider. This is subjective, but I own a few flashlights which feature thin beams which throw a great distance. The heads of these torches are wider to accommodate the larger reflector, making them more difficult to carry comfortably. Also, in complete darkness, using a thin beam is like looking down a tube, and whatever you're searching for can be missed. While searching a footpath or the inside of a car for evidence, seeing a hotspot the size of a tennis ball flying around gets annoying.Read more ›
Build quality is top notch, and performance is nothing short of staggering for such a small torch. It is small enough to slip in a pocket or on your belt and forget about it -- but when needed it delivers more light than most torches several times its size and weight. It's versatile too -- with five different brightness modes and a strobe setting, so you can get just the right amount of light for practically any situation.
Hats off to Fenix, this is a phenomenal piece of kit that I'd highly recommend to anyone who needs a solid, reliable, take-anywhere light with power to spare.
I don't think I can include a link here -- but if you google Ireland's Wildlife PD35 you'll find my full length review.
