Having subscribed to the series of Fabric CD's I eagerly awaited the next installment.
The CD arrived yesterday, delivered in a bubble wrap parcel and the usual tin/card packaging for the cd itself.
On to the music itself. Generally it has a very funky feel to it. It kinda reminds me of a Norman Cook set and almost like something Adam Freeland used to play; look to Coastal Breaks for examples.
The opening is nice a light giving you a brief insight to what the music may be like. DJ Love's 'Underground Funk' is a good opener - moderate beats and not too hard breaking into a funky bass line. Red Tape's 'Worldwide' follows on from this with an Indian feel while the main focus remains, of course, on the funky b-line. Shakedown's 'Get Down' really picks the CD up - you could imagine a cool cosy club with many people grooving away in flares and afros! After that follows the Bassbin twins 'Number 2' which is turning out to be a bit of a classic. The first time I heard this tune was ages ago. Mike & Charlie's 'Body Rock' steers away from the really funky and breaks into more of an analogy sound. But then DJ Technique's 'My Definition' soon sets that straight and we are back on the funk. The Hothedz tune has a b-boy feel to it then DJ Spce's 'Groove operator' gets back to the funk again with a sample b-line from some old tune (help don't know the record but know the lick!). Lee Combs changes the feel slightly with 'Sky Juice', which is more of a break beat tune. The big surprise for me was a tune by Outcast called 'Criminals', which is very good. It was surprising to even see it on this CD let alone how it sounded. Dreadzone follow with what can only be described as a classic Dreadzone sound.

Ali Bs tunes are like a hybrid of old school hip-hop and house tempo grooves. The beats are brash and funky and sound a bit like stuff Norman Cook would play. I was expecting something that sounded like a Plump DJs mix so I was pleasantly suprised by the fresh sounding breaks Ali B uses. The beats sound less programmed and more party orientated and just like hip-hop, there is a lot of sampling and scratching to add variation to the mix.

Ali Bs mix gave me inspiration to seek out music from a lot of the labels he uses that I didn't know about. I sometimes get a bit bored of listening to mix CDs so I love it when I am introduced to new artists through someone elses set because I often go on to buy their albums. This is a great breaks compilation and even though it was among the first Fabric releases it still sounds superior to the more modern approach on the Meat Katie and Freestylers mixes.

Bought this cd the other day, as i am a bit of a sad completist, and am rounding out my collection of Fabric cd's. Otherwise i doubt that i would have made the purchase, in saying that there is nothing wrong with the selection on the cd, it is routinely funky, however, i am getting a bit sick of the connect the dots music, there is no innovation or surprise on here. there is a lot better out there in the fabric series, check out andrew weatherall, adam freeland, stanton warriors to name but a few

This is a great funky breakz album by Ali B.
No frills just funky Nu-Skool breaks. It is well mixed with a good play list.
