This slim volume supported an exhibition. It serves as an excellent introduction to the work of Cadell. There is an impressive range of colour plates showing the range of Cadell's work; interiors, still life and landscape. If you like early twentieth century painting free of the malignant influence of Picasso then this little book will leave you wanting to seek out more Cadell's. There is an excellent concise and well-written biography of Cadell. This avoids the modern fashion for the obligatory probing of the painter's psychology. The superb quality of the paintings speak for themselves. The companion volume on S J Peploe is equally as good. The National Galleries of Scotland should be complimented on the high standard of production.
This is a fascinating study of the wonderful works of F.C.B. Cadell, further enhanced by the excellent illustrations. He is surely one of the greatest of Scotland's painters, working in the colourist tradition.
