I like the new jacket design (and clearer maps), but the paper quality is bargain-basement. The old ones you’d want to keep on your shelf: the new ones you’d want to keep out of the rain in case they disintegrated.
Main dislike is the font for body text of guide and listings: it’s very similar to previous style – may indeed be the same – but it looks heavier and clumsier on this paper. The variant used for the boxouts is just plug-ugly.
Evidently DK have upped their cover prices and lowered their print costs: got to find the margins somewhere in these days of the interweb.
If you want a very detailed book with thorough description of sights, hotels and so on go for lonely planet.
For me, the DK Eyewitness NY was just perfect.
As you might expect for such a city, it is a fairly thick book.
The guide starts with highlights to see, then suggests an itinerary based on 24 hours, 2 or 5 days in NYC. The section following is themed based on interests. NYC for the Foodies, on a Shoestring, Architecture, art lovers, families etc. Following this, the detailed guide book starts with a map of each area then 'must see' features. Each feature has a small key informing whether there are admission charges, guided tours, a restaurant, cafe or shop.
The guide is liberally splashed with relevant, colourful images. The last section of the area guide suggests visits of interests outside the main areas of focus
The final section covers 'Need to know' information under the heading 'Before you go', 'Getting around' and 'Practical information'. For example on tipping and how much. (Who knew Americans tipped so much??)
On the back sleeve there is a Metro map and laminated pull out map. Not sure how much use the map would be as it fairly compact and small print. However, any map is better than none.
To summarise - a very comprehensive and inspiring guide book. Were I to go, it would definitely be coming with me!
