This book takes a very interesting look at all of the main world religions. Admittedly it does not go into too much detail, but after reading it I feel more knowledgeable about all of the religions of the world. The book makes for a good starting point for more detailed studies of the topic. It is easy to read with lots of colour photographs and user friendly graphics. I think that Religious Education would be better following the example of this book, teaching children about all of the religions , rather than indoctrinating them with just one. Having read the book I have come to the conclusion that the behaviour of adherents of all of these religions is markedly similar with regards to the ethics and morality that each religion prescribes , despite their gods being different. A lot of Jesus's teachings would be accepted by Buddhists, Sikh's and Taoists for example in the form of similar behaviour to Christians , although each faith has different beliefs about the essential nature of their deities. For that reason I have come to believe that perhaps it is the same one God who has revealed himself in different ways to different cultures in the form of different religions. I think maybe the Baha'i's hold that view ? There is certainly a lot of similarities between them all. Of course, atheists may believe that all religions are nonsense , relics of a bygone age which science has whipped the rug out from under with it's rational explanations for various phenomena that the ancients didn't know about. However the popularity of religion does go to show that for many people there is more to life than just what we see and that invisible agencies do influence human life. Religion certainly adds to the rich tapestry of life on Earth if nothing else.

Its a good book for an overview and a little history of the different religions. Unfortunately it doesnt go into much detail. For instance Judaism the book doesnt tell you about the different holy days, when they are, how long they are, what you do for the different days.
For christianity it gives less then half a page to the aish, quakers, etc. It makes no mention of the different saints or religious relics. It would have been nice if it was a little more detailed.

This interesting book deals with dozens of religions most people have never heard of and will never hear of again.
After a chapter entitled "What is Religion " the raligions are grouped into 5 types-1) primal (basically tribal) 2) monotheistic (single gods) 3) Indian 4)eastern and 5) new religious movements.
There is a section on who is who in religion, an excellent directory and glossary.
Very well written and researched with first class illustrations and maps.
A fascinating book.
