A very good comprehensive guide to a wonderful city. This guidebook is really good for exploring Amsterdam and contains very decent and up to date information. The pictures and photographs are very good and the maps easy to follow. The only slight drawback is the size. It's too big to fit into most pockets but if you have a bag with you then you can keep it in that. I'd recommend it for a trip to Amsterdam.

We used this and others in the series on a family trip to Europe. The hardest thing about Amsterdam is working out how to buy and use the public transport - compared to other cities (Vienna, Prague, Berlin) the system here is over complex and officious. Beware - if you use a park and ride and go to collect tickets in and out of the centre take the whole family and queue with them - the clerk will only hand out tickets for people he can see! Wasted at least an hour in the wrong queues before worked out where to get the days pass for the trams - clue - its not inside the station! Once up and running the guide was invaluable.

Format: Paperback
This 308-page book - the March 2014 print edition - is a colourful and informative guide to attractions of the capital city of Holland (but not of the Netherlands). It has all the usual features, including excellent maps and diagrams. There are excellent colour photos breaking up the text columns, so you can see what you are looking for. It is a handy up-to-date guidebook, with day trips, walks, maps and phrase book.

The Contents are -
P009: Introducing Amsterdam
P057: Amsterdam Area by Area (8 sub-sections, plus “further afield”, guided walks and “Beyond Amsterdam” - and let me recommend a trip to the town of Naarden (Naarden-Bussum station))
P211: Traveller’s Needs (where to stay; where to eat & drink; shopping; entertainment, etc.)
P251: Survival Guide (practical information; getting there, getting around)
P274: Street Finder
P288: General Index
P307: Phrase Book

There was a lot of useful detail in the guide. Museums were well described with useful information on which trams to catch. I would have given it 5 stars if there had been a little more information on bars and restaurants a little further out.

I cannot praise the DK Eyewitness Guides highly enough.
I have purchased one for every European city visited over the last five years.
They are detailed yet concise and have provided information I would not have known.
Bought other guides but not a patch on these.
Excellent

Comprehensive but the layout is muddled, descriptions are simplistically written and the mass of visual information is often confusing. The best feature is the detachable map which could then be used with a better written guide.

I really like the photographs and the highlighted sights. However the book layout can be a bit confusing at first. You may need an ordinary map on your travels as well as this guide.
