Based on the novel by Nobel Prize winner Patrick White, THE EYE OF THE STORM is a savage exploration of family relationships and the sharp undercurrents of love and hate, comedy and tragedy, which define them. When Elizabeth Hunter (Charlotte Rampling) has a stroke, her son and daughter (Oscar ® Award Winner Geoffrey Rush and Academy Award nominee Judy Davis) fly across the world to be at her bedside sparking the family s old frictions and resentments. They struggle to come to terms with who they are, what they mean to each other and finally, how they can best survive to find peace in their lives - their own, eye of the storm.

This story is about deep family rift not to be easily healed by dramatic events. Loss, disappointment and sorrow shown differently by four main protagonists.
A good old cerebral journey: Well worth the effort.
This 2011 Australian film adaption of the famous novel by Patrick White didn't reach Edinburgh where I live until 2013.
Yes, I know the novel won The Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973 and is considered a classic. However, I watched it largely out of my admiration for renowned Australian actresses Elizabeth Alexander and Judy Davis and to see Geoffrey Rush who was so good in the film biopic of Peter Sellers ` The Life and Death of Peter Sellers ` (2004). I remember Elizabeth `Liz` Alexander from a really good activist's film from 1981 called `The Killing of Angel Street` directed by Donald Crombie and Judy Davis from a film with a similar theme called `Heatwave` (directed by Phillip Noyce). Those were the early 1980's - the so-called New Wave of Aussie cinema.
The film certainly depicts greed and sibling rivalry well.
As Australian reviewer and film critic Thomas Caldwell puts it “Needless to say, the characters of The Eye of the Storm are a troubled, complex and frequently dislikeable bunch. Even the kind, sensible and faithful family lawyer Arnold Wyburd (John Gaden) doesn’t come away unscathed. And yet, this is what makes them compelling, endearing and recognisable characters.”
