Extra Playful is the first new material from Cale since 2005's Black Acetate, appearing ahead of a new album set for release in 2012. It ain't world changing, but it is hugely enjoyable; as playful as promised on tracks like 'Catastrofuk', where Cale's agenda is made crystal clear in the lyric "Say hello to the future, Say goodbye to the past". The highlight, 'Hey Ray', manages to tie up the past and future quite nicely; the subject matter a typically barmy tribute to an old associate from his Velvet Underground days. It's hard to hear it with its skittering beats and off kilter vocals and imagine a 69 year old as the brains behind it. As usual, John Cale clearly revels in challenging our expectations of him, and why the hell not? He's spent the last 40 odd years as a rock and roll maverick, flying in the face of convention, so why stop now? You didn't seriously expect him to don a cardigan and slippers did you?

A great taster for the new album, due in February apparently. As with Hobosapiens and blackAcetate, this release demonstrates more ideas in one song than many young bucks do in an entire album these days. "Hey Ray" is particularly fun.

Stand out track is 'Hey Ray', a bit of jollity that takes off from the Cuban Missile Crisis and cites Americans and British as the people you least want to turn up at a party. It is the best structured piece of cut-up dissonance you are likely to hear. Elsewhere, in 'Whaddya Mean By That?' I was surprised to hear that such an outspoken debauchee locks the door and I am still struggling to decipher 'Pile A L'Heure' both in language terms and getting past the vocoder but I am sure my French will improve on further listening, and the white noise creeps up on you until it overtakes everything, nice (or nasty if you hate white noise). Good to hear a jaundiced view of the extra playful on the opening track and thankfully the closing track 'Perfection' is not - just a strong song well played. Song for song a bit pricier than 'Black Acetate' or 'Shift Adventures in Nookie Wood' but a stronger collection of songs than either so worth the extra payfull.
