Product description

Product Description

For popular Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen, the title of his sixth album for ECM has a programmatic significance. Extended Circle refers, he says, to the completion of a "double circle" of trilogies: the first with the trio heard on Changing Places, The Ground and Being There, and the second with the quartet (formed inside the expanded ensemble of Restored, Returned in 2009 and then documented on The Well in 2012).

Recorded in Oslo in June 2013, the album quietly but most assuredly takes Gustavsen's music to the next stage of its development. His quartet with Tore Brunborg, Mats Eilertsen and long-term associate Jarle Vespestad has matured into a group whose interactions draw strength from restraint, patiently building the music toward its climaxes. Extended Circle incorporates tunes inspired by chorales and spirituals, developed collectively and gradually integrated into the repertoire as the group toured in the wake of The Well.

Here are new gospel-tinged pieces and ballads from Tord's pen, gentle and luminescent group improvisations, and an ecstatic interpretation of the Norwegian traditional "Eg Veit I Himmerik Ei Borg" ("I Know A Castle In Heaven"). The recording opens and closes with a trio piece, while exploring textural and dynamic variations in between. "You come back to the point of departure but with new insight - and things are the same but not the same," Gustavsen sums up an album that in his view points forward to musical openness, but also back to his 2003 ECM debut.

Personnel: Tord Gustavsen (piano), Tore Brunborg (tenor saxophone), Mats Eilertsen (double bass), Jarle Vespestad (drums)

Review

(4.5 stars) Meditative and swinging in turns...the best of the group's playing recalls Jarrett and Garbarek's 1978 album My Song. Which is no mean praise. --The Independent On Sunday, (Phil Johnson), January 19, 2014

(4 stars) A delicious collage of hypnotic grooving, softly stroked gospel themes, and perhaps more gloves-off jazz piano from the leader than on all five of his previous ECM albums. --The Guardian, (John Fordham), January 17, 2014

(4 stars) Beautifully constructed and recorded album...Go with it...you will emerge refreshed and renewed. --Jazzwise, (Alyn Shipton), March 2014

(4 stars) Space, quiet, contemplative calm...the pianist's music has all the qualities listeners seek out from Nordic music. Seasoned in though, is a touch of blues and gospel. --The Times, (John Bungey), February 1, 2014

(4 stars) That spooky super-emotive spiritual sound that only Gustavsen can produce hits you smack in the face; it's all in the timing and Gustavsen's manipulation of silence for dramatic effect is immediate...Brunborg is magnificent throughout. --Marlbank, (Stephen Graham), January 14, 2014

Gustavsen continues to transfix with contemplative sound, space and emotion. Exquisitely recorded and packaged by ECM. --LondonJazzNews, (Adrian Pallant), January 26, 2014

Overall it feels as if, with each new album, Tord Gustavsen refines his art still further. He hones it, leaving out the extraneous and making sure that all that is left is essential. Essence - the word says it all, really. Some kind of artistic truth and eternal beauty, some holy grail of what happens when human beings make sounds in harmony with one another. It's what he is after, what he has always been after, and what he gets closer to with every new musical step. --The Jazz Breakfast, (Peter Bacon), January 24, 2014
