The eighties managed to churn out some of the greatest and most enduring children's films that thus far have gone completely unmatched in their dreamlike quality as well as the sheer integrity of the story, The Goonies and Stand By Me are very good examples of such and the Explorers manages to fall under exactly the same thread.

The story in short is about a group of boys, who following the technical displays that appear in the dreams of romanticistic Ben construct a device that they soon realise can transport them wherever they like. Though the boys soon learn that these plans that Ben "dreams" must be coming from somewhere.

In all honesty this film really is an absolute treasure that for some unknown reason has not managed to maintain as high a popularity as some of the other films in its category. Its very dreamlike and innocent quality is something that I simply do not think kid films can get away with nowadays, especially with reference to Ben who is such a sweethearted dreamer of the sort that I think we can all relate to when we were young.

Maybe I am going through a phase where I am wanting to recover all of the films that I remember seeing as a kid, or maybe just remember what it felt like to be a kid. This film is certainly filled with a magic that should not ever be overlooked.

I saw this film when it was first released and though it did not have the same success as ET, I think it is a classic. If as a kid you have ever sat in your back yard and dreamed of a life less ordinary than this is the film for you. Even 25 years later, it leaves me feeling with that sense of awe of what is yet to come as if I were still a child of 13. For me this film is all about the stuff that dreams are made of.

A great 80's film that always brings nostalgia everytime I watch it. A story about three boys(Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix in their film debuts) that have the same dream, that shows a circuit diagram. They build the circuit and find they can create and control a sealed bubble of any size. They use this technology in a d.i.y flying craft they make from scrap, and fly around the sky and eventually into space where they meet some strange friends!
Unfortunately the story gets a little lost near the end, mainly because the studio execs saw a rough cut of the film and decided to release it early. The director Joe Dante wasn't happy with it and asked to add more scenes but was shunned and all extra scenes were binned. So even now there will never be the full director's cut many people like me would love to see.
Still though a great 80's film!

Explorers is directed by Joe Dante and written by Eric Luke. It stars Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, Jason Presson and Amanda Peterson. Music is by Jerry Goldsmith and cinematography by John Hora.

It's the family friendly sci-fi that Joe Dante did after he made Gremlins, and it's a film of much fun and childish splendour that is only done down by getting away from itself in the last quarter.

Plot basically sees three young lads (Hawke, Phoenix and Presson) with different talents and ideals who come together to fashion a spacecraft as they deal with the perils of school (bullies, puppy love, scholastic pressure). Taking off, the boys eventually go into space and encounter an alien race who have an interesting view on the human race...

Dante had studio interference to contend with and he eventually re-edited the film for home format release. The film does feel compromised and rushed towards the end, but the story holds up real well and the young actors (Dante's excellent direction of youngsters is often forgotten) engage and entertain for all the right reasons. It's a bit derivative and it does at times feel like Dante is just making a movie so he can bathe in homage nostalgia, but there is intelligence in the sci-fi factors before it gets confused as to its messages and the aliens we finally meet annoy and disappoint.

Weird and wondrous, fun and fragile, Explorers is a mixed bag for sure. 7/10

It was produced in the early 80's, before i was born, but i still love the absolutely awful,spaceship-on-a-piece-of-string special effects, that 3 young friends manage to build and fly. there's ben, who dreams of being an astronaut (ethan hawke), wolfgang,a clever science nerd constantly picked on for his name and dress sense (river phoenix-yay!) and darren, who is a kid from the wrong side of the tracks everyone ignores-even his parents(jason presson). the 3 friends recieve a message from what they believe to be from outer space, haul some junk together and manage to fly around in it. it sounds simple, basic and predictable and may be to some people but is a brilliantly thought up movie with good jokes, songs and strong bonds of friendship. the other actors are outshined by river phoenix but all performances are strong and the friendship between the boys seems genuine. 5/5, worth every penny you're being asked to pay for it.

This is a great little movie that has stayed with me since I first saw it in the eighties. It's a very imaginative movie for it's type and full of that priceless sense of boyish wonder, belief and enthusiasm that I struggle to maintain (to some degree) today. Ethan Hawke's character reminds me of myself at that age and it always serves as a reminder of how I once was and that it's something a never want to lose touch with. I love the way it so easily solves the obvious problem of how 3 boys can build a spaceship! A great story, well written and acted and a "must see" for everyone.
