From the Back Cover

Profusely illustrated with fine instances of architectural experimentation through the centuries, Experiencing Architecture manages to convey the intellectual excitement of superb design. From teacups, riding boots, golf balls, and underwater sculpture to the villas of Palladio and the fish-feeding pavilion of the Peking Winter Palace, the author ranges over the less-familiar by-ways of designing excellence. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Experiencing Architecture was a basic text in my first year of design school; the principles that I learned from it have followed me ever since.
Rasmussen takes the visual world apart and taught me to see things in their simplest forms. His commentaries on form, texture, and massing heightened my appreciation for all forms of design; his discussion of color--for one who is colorblind--provided a life-long guidedog.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wanted to pioneer the Lego curriculum at university--

Years ago I wanted to learn something about architecture. I've always been interested in buildings: the beauty and the technology behind. This book served the purpose of giving an introduction and explanation of the basic concepts very well. It managed to answer the why and how questions on different levels of scale, as well in details as in general concepts. Most important of all it enforced my appreciation of architecture as a vital and interesting piece of art. Now having read tens of books more on the subject, I would still choose this one as the book to begin with.

combining both a sensual and analytical appraisal, this book communicates the aesthetic values by which this author believes architecture can be comprehended. An optimistic book predating the excess of postmodernism and strong on sensitivity.

Great book if you have an interest in or starting an architecture degree or anyone looking to broaden their mind in the understanding of how we can perceive space and objects in different ways. Enlightening and thought provoking book that will change the way that you understand the visual world. Although quite a short read, Rasmussen has wonderfully divided the book into memorable chapters that are great to use as reference. Therefore it is a great book to add to your library and find use for again and again.

Wonderful book, read it. Anyone interested in why buildings can be exciting, or why buildings can be atrocities (in lumpen, lightless degradation) read this book: this book is a passionate essay on beauty.
