I've read this book twice this year already, so that shows how highly I think of it. I appreciate the down to earth and clear style of the writer, with the book containing many valuable instructions on how to live your life directly, rather than through the veil of thought.
I haven't given 5 stars however, due to her claiming as fact some things that cannot be verified; I also found some of the content to be contentious. After having said that, it's good that she is willing to be true to herself and give her honest opinions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basic observations on Buddhism 22 May 2012

Most books about Buddhism are about concepts and discussions of the many teaching lists that the Buddha created. A few of the best are directly about the experience of meditation and the process of progressing awareness. This book is somewhere in between. It is filled with basic observations about Buddhist practice. I have read scores of books about Buddhism over the last year, and this ranks up there, even ahead of most of those that make the lists of the best books on Buddhism. I've been practicing for 3 years and having beginners problems of missing the point of practice. This book was good for me in that it focused on the purpose of practice as being developing awareness and ceasing to live in a world of thoughts (the What is Meditation section). It reverberates with the teachings of Ajahn Sumedho, who imho is the best teacher of Buddhist practice, and focuses on the development of simple intuitive awareness. She also had a lot of specific observations about meditation. I consider that I understand a lot about this already, but I kept running across points that I was newly learning about. (the How to Meditate section). The concluding section is called Living Truth. It was a lot of interesting generalities. I particularly found valuable the section on reincarnation. The Buddha says that the theory of a soul that survives death is incorrect, and that the theory that everything dies with the death of the body is also incorrect. How then to understand this issue? She addresses it. I am going to next read her book on this subject, as well as her Simple Guides to Theravada Buddhism and Zen Buddhism. She is talented at mining simple direct observations about practice.
