First of all, if you're looking at this review for the Director's Cut, you've probably seen The Expendables already, so I shan't bother talking about the pros and cons of film itself. Instead I'll stick to why, in many people's opinions (including my own), this is the better version of the film.

To be honest, the vast majority of the changes made here are quite small, but it's definitely a case of the whole being greater than the sum of it's parts. A lot of the new dialogue is not only funnier than what was in the theatrical version, but much of it also serves to make the characters more interesting and well-rounded; while I'm not going to claim they're now deep, thought-provoking and complex people (after all, this is still an action movie), they do seem more human and less like the cardboard cut-outs they were before. Sly has also tinkered with the editing in some of the action scenes, and while it may not be easy to spot what exactly is different, the sequences as a whole flow more easily and seem a bit more lucid.

The major changes involve the new opening credits sequence and the new soundtrack applied to the big finale, and how you feel about these differences will probably be down to personal taste more than anything. While I liked the new footage used during the opening credits, I felt the choice of music was out of place and was trying to make the scene far too downbeat. Conversely, I thought the use of Shinedown's "Diamond Eyes" over the final firefight was a big improvement - it gave the scene a lot more energy and to me the rock soundtrack made it feel far more oldschool (which was surely what the entire movie was trying to be, right?).Read more ›

Well, its not going to win any Oscars thats for sure, but as you would guess with Stallone as one of the writers, its similar to his recent revamp(goodbye call) of Rambo in the action stakes. Stallone is the main character, alongside Jason Statham & a cast of various past & present action film actors. The story is pretty basic, in that Stallone is the head of a group of Merc's for hire, those Mercs being Stallone(gun specialist), Statham(knife throwing specialist), Lundgren(all round specialist), Jet Li(hand to hand specialist), Randy Couture(hand to hand specialist, ok wrestler) & Terry Crews(destructive weapons specilaist). Who get thier jobs from Mickey Rourke's World weary, connections in every port, yet frail at heart character. Arnold Schwarzenegger & Bruce Willis do pop up with Stallone, in what can be best described as the Godfather meeting of the action hereos, but Arnie & Bruce are only in the film for this meeting, which is about 5 minutes.

The story is basic fare really, which pits a bunch of Mercs on an unkown island against hundreds of soliders loyal to a dictator, made evil by ex-CIA agent Eric Roberts, and his henchman leader Steve Austin. Thats right, hundreds of cannon fodder poorly trianed soliders, against a handfull of top specialist mercs with an array of destructive weapons, you get where this is going right ? ;-)

Still, sure its nice to see all these action heroes togher, but it does leave you wondering & begging the question at the end of it. where are the new generation of action heroes ? where are the next Stallones, Schwarzeneggers and Willis's coming from ? they are a dieing breed it seems, and no matter how you dress up an ex-wrestling star or an ordinary actor, they just arent in the same leauge imo. Well worth watching to see an old school gore action fest, just dont go expecting anything revolutionary. Its an Ok silly OTT action fix.

Barney Ross leads the "Expendables", a band of highly skilled mercenaries.

When the group is commissioned by the mysterious Mr. Church to assassinate the merciless dictator of a small South American island, Barney heads to the remote locale to scout out their opposition.

Once there, he meets with local rebel Sandra and discover the true nature of the conflict engulfing the city.

When he escapes the island and Sandra stays behind, Ross must choose to either walk away and save his own life - or attempt a suicidal rescue mission that might just save his soul....

It's the film I wanted to do really well, these are some of my favourite actors from the eighties, rolled into one film, to do an old school classic.

And for me, it was a big letdown. Each member has made worse films, but his had so much going for it, and Stallone gave us to little, and promised us so much.

The plot and narrative are straight from the nineties bin of sin, and the action sequences, the main thing about his film, felt overlong and boring. The final set piece is good, but it gets very long indeed.

Thrown in with the fact that you cannot understand half the cast sometimes in the film, and the bad CGI, it's one of the biggest letdowns in recent memory.

But, there is the scene with the Planet Hollywood owners, which is amazing and nostalgic, and almost makes up for the entire thing.

Okay 'Bruce' and 'Arnie' only really had short walk-on parts, however what a collection of many of our all time favourite action-hero's of the last decade or so.
The film itself is a tongue-in-cheek action film with none of the main character's taking themselves too seriously which is why the film works.
It's pure entertainment with plenty of action packed scenes.
The group of skilled Mercenaries led by 'Barney Ross'(Stallone) are hired to kill a South American dictator, the mission far from strait forward of course.
'Steve Austin'(Paine) plays the role of one of the bad-guys which suits who he is on screen, 'Jason Statham'(Lee Christmas) perhaps one of the most convincing of the action-hero's in this the first of the 'Expendable' movies..
'Sly' still somehow manages to impress in these action-roles, this movie released almost 4 years ago now, and yes
'Sylvester Stallone' is still playing these action-roles as of course are many of the other cast members..
The film itself is a visual spectacle most action fans should enjoy.
