Product Description

About the Author

Louise Lague embarked on her first solo adventure at age three, after getting bored in her front yard. Her terrified parents kept her on a leash for thirteen years, then took her to Europe for the first time, which she found mindboggling and generally awesome. She can no longer count how many times she’s been back, but never before for more than a month. A journalist, she wrote for Time Inc. magazines for twenty years. Her work has also appeared in O, Self, Glamour, and the New York Times travel section. Tom Lichty dabbled in the wine exporting business for years, not to make money (he didn’t), but to travel (he did), and discovered that travel is like a fine pinot noir: adventurous, savory, and somewhat addictive. He is retired as a graphic-design consultant and university lecturer. Over half a million copies of his books have been sold. Interspersed with legitimate employment, he has been a pilot, a radio announcer, a tugboat operator, and a newspaper publisher.

As I was off on a trip to Girona, I typed it in to the search and this is what I got.

A pleasent enough read but not what i was expecting. The preperation was the most interesting part, particularly the estate sale.
However once there travels began i would have like more detail on the places , the food they eat, the sites they visited.

I'm also hoping to "sell it all" and see the world and settle in Spain as expat.
However this couple had no house to sell, put their furniture in storage and went on a year long well planned holiday . Good for them but not quite as adventurous as I thought.

Well written and I'll probably check out the blog.

HASH(0x8e0a4030) out of 5 stars Life outside USA, how to do it, just a great read if you stay home 1 May 2014
By Sue Tatem - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
An Oregon retired couple spent a year as expats in Girona Spain, Chania Greece, Bellagio and Venice Italy, and Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Both are lifelong writers and their "he wrote, she wrote" book is clear, concise, funny, absorbing, and well written on every page. The book covers their year of preparations, their medical problems, how they managed the money and languages, and their return to Oregon. I read the printed book in a day. It is a page turner. Despite the cover, they did not travel in a camper. They did not rent cars. They used planes and local transportation -- buses, trains, ferries, bicycles, and taxis. Most of all they used their feet, hiking and walking everywhere. Reading the book in a day, I had the expat adventures on my sofa. It is an easy and great read.

HASH(0x8e0a4084) out of 5 stars Everyone's dream to travel for a year - this couple took the step and this book tells us all about it 6 May 2014

What a great book - these two closed up their home and traveled for a year, staying in Spain, Crete, Venice, Bellagio, and Puerto Vallarta - the last for 6 glorious months. The authors are both witty and entertaining, as well as being adventurous - to actually take this journey many of us only think about. Great read from the comfort of home and hearth. They traveled by train, boat and bus, local and across borders, and stayed in apartments rented ahead of time after extensive online research. These two are seasoned and enthusiastic travelers - an inspiration for those of us who have long term travel on our bucket lists ! Read this book to share their adventures and mishaps (no spoilers here), find inspiration to take the trip yourselves if so inclined, and for a great way to spend an afternoon or evening in the comfort of home.

HASH(0x8d74fc9c) out of 5 stars An Expat Experience - Soup to Nuts! 15 May 2014
By Terri - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
The Expat Almanac is a joy. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to uproot your entire life, sell your stuff, and set out on the international travel adventure of a lifetime, then you’ll be enthralled by Tom and Louise’s engaging tales, intrepid spirits, and fantastic writing.

They describe themselves as “well into our second fifty years” and provide a very personal account of the real expat experience, with both its highs and lows. From the elation of living on a Greek island, to the nightmare of life-threatening surgery in a foreign land, they don’t pull any punches. And through it all, the remarkable friends they made will be with them for a lifetime.

We discovered Louise and Tom’s blog when they were in the midst of downsizing and planning for their journey. As serial expats ourselves we could relate to what they were going through. We were immediately drawn to their captivating writing infused with an unfailing sense of humor. This book presents the essence of their exploits, distilled from their blog. It includes great introductions to each chapter and new material never shared in their blog. If you’re considering this kind of life change - or you’re an avid armchair traveler - you’ll enjoy it immensely.

HASH(0x8e0a430c) out of 5 stars Grab a bottle of wine and settle in for an adventure 24 July 2014

Louise Lague and Tom Lichty have an incredible command of the English language. The detail and descriptions in this book are so rich that I could almost imagine them telling the tale to me over a fine bottle of wine. I enjoyed every minute of it. I only wish it were longer! I hope they will come out with more books soon.
