I would not necessarily recommend this for a student working on his own, though it is entirely possible to use it for that. If you do, you will also need the answer booklet, sold separately, or you'll be annoyed when you receive the book and find you can't check your answers!
"Intermediate" level here assumes that you have done some French before: the first chapter begins with the present tense, but assumes that you know about irregular verbs and the reflexive within the first two questions. As a result, I tend to use this with GCSE students and above.
One criticism: it is limited with regards to topics. To help you choose if it covers enough ground for you, here are the 15 chapters:
1. Present tense inc en train de
2. Perfect / imperfect / venir de (present tense only)
3. Near future and simple future
4. Time expressions
8. Adjectives and adverbs
9. Demonstrative and possessive adjectives and prononuns
10. Comparative and superlative
11. Direct and indirect object pronouns
13. Relative pronouns
14. Causes / consequences
15. Present subjunctive
